Shortening standard diff PICS ADDED

back on topic, if the torana rear end is 3" shorter, it will fit nicely, and provide about 1/2" clearance between rim and inner wheelarch. if i run into problems even after the diff, i will put narrower tyres on

I had an EH diff shortened 1 1/2 inchs either side,
and had the axles done also(obviously one would think)
Turns out, I only had to shorten the housing, and use LJ Torana axles.
By the looks of the pic with the ruler, and the text you wrote,
It sounds like your assuming a 3" short diff = 3" either side?
The LJ Diff & axles will give you 1 1/2" either side.
Love the wheels by the way
How much you shorten the diff, Is affected by right hight you want to some extent.
If you want it low, you'll need clearance on the inside & outside of the tyre.
A higher ride hight, will clear the rubbing easier.

Just reading with some interest and I can say you may have dramas with the inside as well.1/2 inch clearance is not really enough especially with a bit of weight onboard and and a fast bumpy corner cause the springs do move side to side a fair bit. The wheels I have are also 7 inch wide but I have pumped the guards and removed the lip to clear.
Your car looks pretty nice and unless you want to repaint I wouldn't suggest doing the pump thing. If you were really keen you could cut the inner chassis rail lip and extend the wheel arch inwards by 1/2 inch either side but again a lot of work! 6 inch rims on the ek and say 205 tyres are probably the biggest without bodymods. Anyway goodluck and think hard about body modification as you really cant go back once its done.

Don't know fair price on a torana diff,
but I reckon it would be easier (if you do it yourselves) or
Cheaper (If you have it done) to shorten the housing youve got and fit torana axles.
That all depends on the price of the tory diff.
you might have to buy a complete diff, to get the axles!
Then you'll have all the parts to go either way,
correct housing, mounts, axles & spare diff centre.
Also consider the hand brake set-up, not sure if tory's are similar?

I used to run 14 x7's with a 235/50 on the rear of my EK ute. It was lowered 2" and the guard lip had been cut back to the edge of the body(not by me, but pretty rough). These cleared OK except for high speed cornering. They rubbed on the inside.
But I do love American Racing mags, their quality is phenomonal compared to any other rim! Two of my mates run them and they are a really well built and finished rim.

but a minispool is of no real use to you,unless
you wanna go really fast in a straight line,
with plenty of traction off the line
or do some killer 2 wheel burnouts
Ideal for the dragstrip etc
Basically a minispool locks the two back axles together
so they spin at the same speed,sorta like a L.S.D. diff
as opposed to a standard diff that spins the outside wheel
faster when going through corners
you should be able to score a LC/LJ complete diff for approx $100-$200
depending on the ratio, you'll pay more for a 3:08
as opposed to a 3:55
