GRRR stuffing around !! Took me 2 days to do the timing chain with plenty of spanners growing wings !!

I had to make up a puller and installer for the crank gear then off and on 3 times to finally get the sprockets parrallel. Spent hours looking for a box of shims i had some where, when i finally did find them none the right size. The torrington bearing is 30 though thicker isnt it, that pushed the cam sprocket forward so the crank has to be the same.

Anyway, waiting now for a oil pick up and most of the suspension is done, just got to put it all back together.

See what tomorrow brings.

An old brake piston was just the right size and length to get the crank sprocket on, bewdy !!

Gotta love modifying cars - change one thing, means changing 3 others .........

Really testing my patience this quick tidy up is !!!!

So you know I had to space the crank gear out 30 thou to suit the new torrington timing gear bearing, well no worries BUT I did forget the knock on effect !!
You see the harmonic balancer also pushes out 30 thou, thats easy, except now the water pump pulley and the alternator need to move as well.
Back to the shim box !! Dont have any, so ordered some today.

Next thing, I was hoping to use rubber bushes in the lower control arms now that i am ridding the offset bushes, yeah right !
I don't normally bag companies but Mackay rubber bushes don't fit, the shells into the control arms are as loose as a Kings Cross local Sunday lunch time !!!!!!
Back to the whiteline, the comparison in the shells is amazing, they fit nice and tight like there supposed to. You can probably sence the excitement I have in relation to product control right now.

Really bugs me how this world is going, not just from the frustation but the waste as well, those Mackay bushes are usless and will just go into the bin. Id'e throw them at the pimply sales guy, but its not his fault its the overseas manufacturing and the lack of quarrrrrity control ( did i say that right ) !!

Starting to get anxious, time ticking away !!!!!!!

Well the nationals are done and dusted for another year.

Thanks to all the people in the Queensland club for a great event and location, Stanthorpe is a lovely town.
I was humbled by this event as my car won 1st in EK modified, however there were plenty of cars as we know have as much love and effort put into
them and its a shame that not everyone could get recognition.
There were a few casualties with roo strikes, broken suspension and a broken windscreen ! I fortunately came back reletively unscathed apart for a tussle with a 6 foot high speed hump at Hinze dam, a few scratches on the exhaust but nothing to worry about.

I can report my new upper control arms worked a treat and the wheel alignment now is perfect, i could actually feel a little play in the rack as the car fired down the highway straight as an arrow ! No tyre wear at all which i am very happy about.

For the fuel gurus I can tell you on the highway the sniper controlled the usage to best 11.5L to 100Km and the worst, following traffic and in the hills around Cunundra 16.9L per 100km. This was also an effect of not being able to get into overdrive, under 80km/h most of the way. It was fun and snappy although !!!
Car needs a couple of little things, a slight vibration now the tailshaft is spinning quicker due to the gear set change, the obligatory winscreen leak and the pesky brake drag again, this probably coincided with the poor fuel consumption as above, why im putting up with the chinese booster i'll never know !!! Its coming out shortly for a replacement.

All in all an absolute blast of a time and if anyone is considering a nats trip I highly recommend it.

Humble indeed Greg. Overdue recognition of 20 years effort by a very clever feller. A klutz like me can put in the same effort but won’t get anywhere near as good an outcome. Great fun spending the time either way you and Anne again. Next year maybe you can show me how to do a proper burnout.

So in my last post I mentioned that the car has developed the dreaded driveline vibration. Although not bad, enough to warrant some investigation.

Underneath I discovered that the pinion angle was a whopping 6 degrees out from the gearbox !! I didn't feel a thing when i had the 2.73 gears in but the 3.55 ratio has sped the tailshaft up to about 2000 rpm and thats been enough to give me the helicopter drone.

Now you would think I would have checked but no i did not, left it to the diff builder and his measurements were fine but not for an EK.
Why did this change ? When i initially started i had flipped eye springs but the engineer said to low so i went back to the normal eye on top.
Because i rushed the finish for the car 3 years ago I never got around to measuring the angle and i had no issue with the tall diff ! (very surprising with the final measurements).
Ok no choice so out it come !
Now the springs i have in the car are standard height but not reset, it rides great but the springs are nearly flat. This flatness brings the spring perch area to 7.7 degrees, my diff was set up for 0 degreees, being normal height for most cars and the diff was pointing down 3.7 degrees. The math is normal spring perch of 0 degrees would have had the pinion at 4 degrees up, close to the transmission and tailshaft degree, tops but not with my situation, being sagged lowered springs (Which i like).

I can't believe how dirty the underneath is, but i built it to drive and drive i have been, pouring rain for nearly 2 weeks over the nationals period and 2000kms through all sorts of roads up north.

Anyway More math and my solution is to chop out 15mm high wedge from the saddles, and tilt the diff back to get the correct 4 degree rise in the pinion, basically 6 degrees movement.

I also took the oportunity to move the bump stop brackets lower for just that little extra movement.
Welding back together tomorrow, clean and paint where i need to then back in. I have decided no more last minute work before the nationals, hopefully I can cruise around all year before Victor Harbor and be relaxed !!!

Will the caltracs be affected? I suppose you have done length adjustment in the rods if needed. I hope it ends up vibration free mate.

Even with the 3.08 centre in our sedan I get the vibes at 100kmh when going down hill with throttle closed. I did measure angles at some time but whether I recorded it? I plan to tilt pinion up a bit in any case to see if it improves.

I bought some wedges to help diff vibrations in the Chev, they are available in 1/2 degree increments and not too expensive, might be an easy way to check yours out Clay ???

Yes. I used them in the ute. Three degrees from memory. Tacked to diff saddles. I think I will just profile my lowering blocks, after I’ve checked the angles that is.
