Diff identification

Hi all

I've done a search but haven't managed to find anything. How would someone go about identifying a diff ? I know the Ek ute we have doesn't have the the original as I remember doing a few centres and at least one housing when I was a young fella . Wanting to source parts but in not exactly sure what model Holden diff is currently in it ?

what Blacky said, but taking a shot in the dark if it's just another Holden housing most likely EJ, EH, HD, HR which are all basically the same

Not quite. If it's an early diff (3.89 Grey) it will have the early style rear uni joint which looks different to the later ones with their U-bolts.

If it's a later diff, it will most likely be 3.55 or 3.36. The taller diffs (3.08 & 2.78) have 2 long bolts at the bottom where it is held into the rear axle housing.

All of this can be seen without removing any parts.

Hi gents

Not sure if this is much help ? More looking at brake shoes , gaskets , Axel bearings , seals and so on to order . Are the pretty much the same through early holdens ?

That looks like a EH diff, going by the bump stops and center with the 2 long bolts on the bottom.
Also the yolk/uni is different to an FB and EK.

butt will be stamped on the plate under the yoke

I agree it looks to be an original EJ EH housing with 3.08:1 most likely or 2.78. Good cruiser setup. Probably EJ HR brakes though there are possible variations.

Yes, I agree It looks like an EJ/EH housing and brakes, with a 3.08 or 2.78 centre, probably out of a Torana, where they were far more common.

diff ratio might be a little bit tall depending on what engine and tyre sizes you are going with - I tried a 3.08:1 and 14" rims and tyres on my ute for the Nationals one year and spent half my life in 2nd gear at the first sign of a hill.....

Good with a torquey red 173 or bigger, otherwise yes. For a grey would be overdrive.

Cheers mate , it's a pretty lively red 186. head has had the dividers taken out of the intake ports big valves and so on. Have a new set of webbers to hang of it as well . Wheels we bought BCI 15" smoothies 6" front and 7" rear haven't decided on tyre size as yet .
