Hi again,
The non-original motor that’s currently in the FB doesn’t have a bracket on the engine side plate to mount the coil - the original motor I have does.
The coil’s mounted on the brake and clutch lines, but this doesn’t look quite right.
Is that where it should be?
Thanks,
John

There should be a mount on the side plate and corresponding bracket on the coil which slides down over the mount. Position varies somewhat randomly between spark plug holes 3 and 5.

Your pushrod cover is FX-FJ.
But your ignition coil's from a red motor. It's supposed to have a ballast resistor in the ignition circuit, which your FB won't have. You'll be at risk of frying your points with this coil. Go back to a grey motor coil, or get a new 12-V, non-ballast-resistor coil.
Thanks guys. So I think I need to get a SU12 or GT40 coil - anyone compared the two? Hey Rob, did the FJ’s mount the coil on the body somewhere?
Cheers, John

Yes FX FJ were mounted to the firewall hence sideplate with no coil mount

Thanks, Tim. I’ll leave it where it is then until I swap motors.
John, you must have better eyes than I have. How can you pick that coil as being a "Red motor" coil ?
It could well be an SU12, which is the correct 12V (non-resistor) coil for a Grey motor system. SU12 coils made in the 70s & 80s had the same brown Bakelite top as an SU12R. The only way to pick the 2 apart is the stamping on the bottom of the case which reads "Use only with resistor" (on the SU12R).
As the others have said the sideplate without the coil mount bracket is FX/FJ, the FE/FC one has it located between 3 & 4, while the FB-EJ one has it located between 4 & 5.

Dr Terry.
Thanks for the info, Doc. It was Rob (Ardiesse) that picked that coil as being for a Red motor. I had trouble just knowing which item was the coil!!
