Bad casting, or did something let loose and jam it?

This motor was put together some months ago and put in a frame so I run the cam in in at 2200 rpm for 20 mins and then I could run it for a few minutes once a week or so to keep it turning over or whenever I had the need too hear the errantic lumpy idle of an angry grey .....just to keep me enthused . Anyway all went to plan, run the motor in , started and run it for a few minutes every week ....I have always had the air filters on it and its been in my shed since rebuild .
Last week I cranked it over after a few seconds it barked into life run for a minute or so and heard a thump then it immediately started blowing and fuming out the breather and walking stick ...I shut it down immediately ............sat down and had a think about it .......yep something real wrong i thought .........so off comes the head .......just as thought 1 x broken piston ( no 5 ) , 1 x piston ( no 6 ) with a nut imbedded , and 1 x piston ( no 4 ) marked and pitted .....there was some small fragments of steel in no 5 ...nothing recognosiable ............the head had a 3 thou impression of the nut on the flat surface ....nothing much else visible at this stage .
The nut was stainless steel which I used for the carb mounting to the manifold ...no nuts missing on the manifold ......no nuts or hardware missing anywhere .....where the f**k have these come from .........could they have been in the manifold since build, bearing in mind its been run for 20 mins at 2200rpm and had its neck wrang every week ever since .........or something sinister maybe ....... :problem: :problem: :problem: ...full inspection coming soon..........Fingers

  ouch X2

You're not the first to get punched in the head when your piston broke...

Mind you, getting punched in the head with your own nuts is adding insult to injury!

Stripped the head down ... checked all the valves for bends and nicks...all good , checked the seats ..found 2 inlet seats with a fine nick in each ...hit them with a stone cutter and lapped and blued all valves ...all seating well ....had a nut mark pressed into the head .. ..had 3 thou machined off at blueys in Bunyip and all good .....2 of the inlet seats a small nick in each ...hit the 2 seats with a cutter and relapped and blued all valves .......all good and seal well again.. :D ..thankfully the head is now in excellent shape at a minimal cost ......
I went to Nason Engine Parts in Dandenong told them of my misfortune and why I needed get 3 new pistons rings and gudgeons ...only full sets available .....The sales guy was Robin and he was very apologetic .....he said he would look after me on pricing for the full set .......anyway walked out with top and bottom gasket sets ,a full set of 3 1/8 + 40 pistons ,rings and gudgeons and spent less than $300 .00 ....thanks to Robin .......very happy :D    ............out to the shed to do the bottom half ..............Fingers

PS...........I,m thinking like you Mick ............

Got Bluey from Blueys Engine Rebuilder in Bunyip to check the conrods for bend and rebalance everything ( fortunately he kept the weights from my rebuild so making the balancing an easy job ) bores all good ......headed home and assembled the pistons ,rods and rings and installed them...............all good ...head on tomorrow

Hey Fingers.

May I suggest, when you get your grey up and running again, you test it out at at appropriate time.
We all know an engine runs best when the air/fuel charge is cool and dense. also cooler air means more fuel remains a liquid until its lit up just before top dead centre.
That considered, your best chance of getting cooler air is during the night, ideally around 2am. This will also serve as a courtesy call to the neighbours that you are back to enjoying your hobby. :)
