Looks like a EH housing to me and from memory you have to file or machine the HQ backing plate centres to fit the earlier type wheel bearings as they are a bigger outside diameter than the HQ tapered roller bearings.As wot179 said bearings and retainers have to be pressed onto the axle before fitting to the housing.

We bought a press today
So will be able to press the bearings and stuff on i guess tomorrow arvo. My old man cleaned out the ends of the housing where the bearings will sit, reckoned it had a bit of a liner of rust there but its all nice and shiney and smooth now so the bearing should slip in nice now.
Also spent the arvo die grinding the backing plates, still got one more but the bearing slides through one now so that'll be that problem sorted.

Thanks for that info mate. It just confirmed that i'd have to grind out the backing plate to make the bearing fit through it. Should be on track now
