Red Motor Rear End That Will Bolt Into EK Sedan Brisbane
Hey fellas,
I'm chasing a red motor rear end that will bolt straight into my EK sedan. Don't mind if its HR HD or whatever else, as long as it works. Don't need brakes either as i'm going to redrill for HQ stud pattern and use HQ brakes.
Really need one pretty soon, trying to get my car on the road for wintersun. Thanks !

Hey Tim,
I've picked up a HR diff from my mates the Harrisons (of Harrisons Holden and &*#@) and also a set of HR axles for it.
I want it because i'm running a red motor and gearbox in the car, but also for the added strength compared to a grey diff (if there is any that is.. but the motor i'm running is quite a worked engine). Essentially though just so it has a complete red driveline. I've heard the HR diff will bolt straight into the car as well?
I've come to a dilemma in piecing the HQ brakes on, and perhaps this is a topic for a new thread entirely.. but i've got the axles redrilled for HQ pattern and i'm not sure if the wheel bearing, rubber seal and the collar are supposed to be pressed onto the axle, or fitted to the diff housing before the backing plate goes on. The wheel bearing certainly won't slide through the backing plate unless its supposed to be a 2 piece as per the HQ - HZ manual shows. My wheel bearings i've gotten from Autobarn are a one piece unless they somehow come apart which at this stage i don't want to attempt pulling them apart because i'll probably break them.
If anyone knows how to do this conversion (and unfortunately my old man can't remember as we have done this a few years ago on a HR we had..) it'd be greatly appreciated!

If the wheel bearing wont fit through the backing plate then you either have the wrong bearings or the wrong backing plate.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

They are HQ backing plates and what i presume is HR wheel bearings, as per what i asked for. I don't have a HR backing plate available to check if they are a different diameter center hole unfortunately.

Hi, as far as I know the hr centre will fit the ek housing. The diff I have which I believe is eh has the same u bolt mounts as a fb does. The hr housing doesnt use u bolts I think. To the best of my recollection the retainer plate goes on the axle first, then the bearing is pressed on, then the retainer ring. Then the seal?, this all slides thru the backing plate into the diff housing. I know that hk bearings are one piece, sealed with an oring around the outside to keep diff oil in. Hq are tapered bearing,retainer plate s goes on axle first,then seal, then tapered bearing, then retainer ring. tapered shell is hand press fit into housing.

are you talking the 2 halves ? cause the HR set up doesn't have them
as blacky said the bearing should go through the hole in the backing plate with no problems
without pics it goes in this order diff housing backing plate then the 2 retainer plates which should be on yor axles between the bearing and the axle flange so these should have been put on before you fitted the bearings to the axle
if any of that makes any sence
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

I'm pretty sure the HR housing does use U bolts as it looks exactly the same setup as my EK diff, there isn't anywhere for the diff to bolt onto the spring or anything like that.
The bearing i have does infact have a o ring on the outside of it, it seems to fit the HR diff but is too large to slide through the HQ backing plate which leads me to wonder how my old man did it a few years ago.
I'm pretty sure i've got a HR wheel bearing, not a HQ.. at least thats what i asked for. It is a one piece with an Oring on it.

My axles did have two retainer plates on them. One is a flat 2mm piece and the other is slightly larger, about 1.6mm and isn't quite flat, as if to allow the other plate to sit inside it. I will get pictures this afternoon of all the pieces i have though as that will definitely help.

Nick are you sure you have HQ backing plates cause i'mm 99.9% sure all the rear wheel bearings are the same size and i've done this conversion before (HQ brakes including backing plates on a HR housing) and never had an issue

Their definitely HQ as my mate i got them off only has HQ onwards Kingswoods. The wheel bearing is probably only a few mm bigger diameter than the hq backing plate, so i could either get it machined or just die grind the diameter out a little till the bearing slides through it. I just don't remember my old man going to that sort of trouble years ago.
The bearings also aren't tapered they are the same diameter and have a o ring on them, so they must be earlier ones.

The HQ backing plates fitted after slightly filing the diff housing mounting holes, they were maybe half a mm each hole larger hole centers than the diff so they were very easy to fit, the only problem i'm seeing at the moment is the bearing. I also cannot see how the axle with the bearing pressed on it is going to slot into the diff housing without being belted something chronic, its quite a tight fit..
This is the reason i thought that perhaps the bearing was pressed into the housing first, which frankly makes more sense to me.

If it is hr housing it should have a plate on either side where bolts go through. Not u bolts
