Still got the maserati engine. Just having trouble finding the other bits I need. I drove to cranbourne from sydney a couple of months back to look at a maserati wreck for sale but at fifteen grand for a rusty shell I just backed off. If you think holden stuff is hard to find trying sourcing this stuff.
It will happen.

I've been doing my sydney county council fb ute, trying to get my repco crossflow engine running and finishing off a couple of customers projects including stewarts ek wagon.
Not to mention christmas and my two kids under five to entertain.

That's what the Blue rope in the video is for :-P
- but still, it needs fixing, I've heard some horror stories about manuals and this issue, some Subaru Impreza's for example, do it when a nut on the gear has come loose, and can apparently ruin the entire gearbox casing if left alone. - or so I have been told.

Common problem with 5 speed Toyota's as well. We had a Corolla and a Rav4 that used to pop out of 5th

everywhere I post about it, there's always tonnes of people that have had the issue, in all sorts of cars.

One of the main gearbox place's in Shepparton said "I've never heard of any such thing in any car" - at least I know not to go to him :-P

The odd FB/EK will pop out of third gear at times - that's why you hang your handbag on the gear lever. Not that I've ever done that... :oops: . :lol:

I think it was Sam Crupi (my Neighbour in Shepparton, who has a Green EK Sedan and a Pink EK Wagon) that once told me a story about driving back from Queensland (maybe Queensland) and it was refusing to stay in 3rd, to the point where he had to constantly hold it in gear.

back on the subject of the ute, a fortnight ago I decided to pull the spare tyre door off to figure out why it wouldn't shut properly the hinge is bending rather than working as it should the door might be salvageable but the hinge though swimming in wd40 didn't seem to free up been pondering it today that maybe a combination of rust and the thick coating of spray paint the previous owner put on might have stuck the hinge together (found evidence that quite a few things including the tailgate were fitted while the paint was still wet :shock:) also found the tailgate has started to crack and pull away from one of the hinges on it seems to be the remnants of a bogged up dint/rust what options do I have to repair these?
Ideally I'd like to be able to repair and use the tailgate and spare tyre door if possible.

They make repo plastic lower tailgates for around $200. I just bought a mint lower tailgate and it set me back $350. You could spend that sort of money repairing yours. The upper tailgate skins they make need a lot of work to fit also. The repo ones are straight along the top edge. the originals bow a little. You need to make the repo skins follow the contour of the frame other wise they dont fit properly.
I unpicked the skin off My Council ute . Repaired it and the frame and then reattached it. Again lots of work.

Gotta hold her in third off throttle or the gear jumps out :esurprised:

Got the missus stuffed! All comes down to linkages and detent ball/springs.
They do wear out after 30 odd years.
As for the Toyota 5 coggers.......... fifth gear does get a hammering if not operated properly, and unfortunately, a full tear down and re-con is the only solution.
Should be plenty of decent workshops who can perform this sort of work......not very complicated at all.

Only just found this thread (or should i say, bothered to look at it :lol: ) and jesus.. if my sedan was anything close to the condition of your ute i'd of had it done years ago.

My sedan had rust in:

Subframe
Floorpan
Inner and Outer sills
Both sides of cowl drain holes
Both sides of cowl panel
Both sides where the gaurd bolts to the A pillar
Both sides of the bottom of the A pillar / Windscreen section
Both front gaurd bottoms
Both front gaurd eyebrow sections
3/4 Door bottoms
Driver rear quarter
Boot floor sections
Panel behind rear bumper
Boot lid
Inside the Passenger wheel arch
Both corners of the rear seat frame
Inside Passenger rear quarter

Probably more than that. I've been through THREE bonnets to get a good one, as in.. thrown out, used as a sled around a paddock ect.. my fourth was the good one.. onto a second boot lid that i'm yet to install, and onto my second subframe.

If i had as little rust as you guys i'd of been stoked.

I also agree that instead of fiddling around, you need to make a list of which steps need to be done to get it on the road.. ie:

Strip
Fix BODY rust
Fix Panel rust
Fix Subframe rust
Paint body
Restore front end and install
Restore rear end and install

Ect ect.. Get me? Seperate the build into sections and do one bit at a time and it might come together quicker or easier or whatever.

Thats my opinion anyway :D
