Have a look at my posts, 5 years and still going.

Rust you have is normal with any of these old girls.

You know the more pics you show of this car to me the better it looks. To you the rust is bad but it looks pretty minor to me.
I youf want to see rust come and look at my van. I'm replacing the full floor pan inner and out sills and firewall. I've got another one to look at over christmas. If is better I'm going to trash this one.

i have not set a date for my ol girl
she will have her time in the sun
i love project cars especially eks
yes it will cost twice what i originally thought to dodgy up
actually i dont think it will
rego rwc etc costs me as much as a paint job/rust repairs if its not rusted
slow down a bit and be real with prices
and get out a pencil and paper
sitting beside the ute
price what you need front to back and times by 2
if you do all the labour
shell be right ,gotta go and find me beard and hat

Good news, took a bunch of pics when working on it yesterday (Left the camera in the Ute, D'oh!), got a lot more done, got all the $*#@ wiring out. (General rule of thumb, Don't just twist wires together and then tape them without solder or joiners, but then you don't need to be a Computer Technician to know that.)
The bicycle water bottle holder is also out, and has taken up residence on my other vehicle (2002 Apollo Summit MTB.)
The wiper stuff (Linkages, arms motor, all of it) has been removed as we slowly go through stripping it back to find other nasties. So far the nastiest thing we found since the rust and welded guard have been some red backs.
It's coming along at a nice slow speed, a speed that I would expect for it, especially with Allison having a full time job, and the Ute being over 30 minute drive away.

I expect to not do all that much now until late February. as the first half of February will be moving into the new house. (Which we have bought outright, no loans or anything. - not even the first home buyers grant was used.)

Either way, when its in the shed at the new place, I expect to do a lot more on it. - so expect not much till Late February.

---- will have to get the camera out of it in a few days and upload pics.

Daniel you make it sound like we are doing bugger all a good 6 hours over christmas wasn't a bad effort.

The plan for those that continue to pester about it even though it's quite clear what our objective is.

REPAIR to get her on the road and restore as parts become avaliable.

Looks like there will be another project in the new shed next to the FB.
I recently shat 5th gear in my Daihatsu. (jumps out over and over, only 5th) so I will have to swap out the manual in the new shed with another one. -yeay-
I could fix 5th gear myself, but I need the car running as quick as possible, so I will swap in a second hander, and repair my old box over time. Kind of need a gearbox in my Daihatsu for work (Ah, the fun of second hand cars)

Either way it will be one of the many projects that will be done alongside the FB.

That's what the Blue rope in the video is for :-P
- but still, it needs fixing, I've heard some horror stories about manuals and this issue, some Subaru Impreza's for example, do it when a nut on the gear has come loose, and can apparently ruin the entire gearbox casing if left alone. - or so I have been told.

Great plan guys

The early stages of my wagon resto went like this... drive it to work during the week, pull it apart Friday night, back together Sunday... and repeat until completed

Looking forward to the updates!

Let's hope it's as easy to fix as tightening a nut. Lunching the entire gearbox will certainly tighten your nuts...

oh most definitely. however if it is the gear itself (long story, here's the gist: bought the car, all was good, apart from the engine, which had a crack in the block. did a full engine rebuild, engine good as new, checked all fluid levels, including gearbox, all was good, when 5th gear failed, checked gearbox fluid, pretty much empty. it took about 700mls to fill it. no idea where it went, no oil on the driveways, or under the car. no visual signs of leak. either way, no oil = probably melted something in the gearbox possibly 5th itself - hooray.)
if the physical gears for 5th are damaged, then I might get some new ones cut at a different ratio, bring the RPM down a bit on the highway. as 3,500RPM in 5th at 100km/h is a bit steep. even so it only does 4.6L/100KM (highway driving) - going to try and make it even better :-P
