Chrome is good enough to save the 3-4 grand for rechroming.

and if the sills and floors are good enough to not completely replace you are in for a reasonably pain free freshen up.
Hi Harko. I'm Daniel. or as you put it: "Allison's man"
I've done a fair bit of work on my own car (silly jap buzz box) and have had fun helping my brother make many repairs to his HQ Kingswood wagon. nothing ever as in depth as a full restoration, but you have to start somewhere :-)

The chrome work is quite good on the front bumper, scratched up on the rear drivers side though. but going by the other front bumper that was in the back of it, the previous owner has changed the bumper. (one found in back had many bumps and dings, and was rusting through the chrome)

as for a closer inspection on the floor, there is one small hole in it behind the seat, near where the seatbelts have been bolted through, but it looks like its been cut, and then let to rust. and judging by what can be seen, it looks as though its had water inside that has just been let sit there. other than that seems pretty good all over, apart from where the gearbox attaches underneath:

however I do expect that we will find a lot of surprises when removing the panels.
Speaking of surprises. we got $1.46 cash back in the car :-P (yes, there was a 1c piece also)

As for other surprises, found an old Spark tool/feeler gauge. did some googling and couldn't find any info on it.
anyone able to shed some light onto the age of this tool?

Just a little info, the 3 speed gearbox actually hangs off the back of the motor and dosen't attach to the any other part of the car. Strange I know but thats how they were. The rear engine mounts x 2 are located on the subframe rails.

ah, cool. that helps :-)
I think the previous owner was going to modify it, as there's parts of a Toyota Celica 5 speed in the back. :? but the original 3 speed column shift box was in there also, however the bearings for its output shaft are rooted.

cant really do much till I can get a hold of a workshop manual for it.

sorry to sound like a complete knob, but which mirrors should i be looking for, as im on the rare spares site ( http://www.rarespares.net.au/rarespares ... p=EXTERIOR )
and I'm seeing Straight arms, right angles, and curved ones. which ones are closest to the original (if the ute had any originally) or which would suit it the best.

Try posting that question in one of the other sections of the forum Daniel, cause unless people are watching this thread they probably won't answer

Hi Daniel,

Look at my thread, you will see an original EK mirror on driver's door, and what I think is a Nasco accessory one on the passenger side.

I have some questions about the canopy, could you possibly take some more snaps of it please? I am interested in how it was/is attached into the tray, the windows, roof support rails, and then how it was weather proofed. Also, did it have an upper door?

If you don't want it, I'm happy to come out to Finley to collect! (My family are from just the other side of the Murray, and I'll be back down that way soon-ish.

Cheers,

The canopy looks like its been constructed out of an old caravan. it just sat over the sides of the tray (Metal on paint) and had 4 hooks that hooked around 2 custom rails inside the tray. it looks like there was a rear door on it at one time, but it didn't come with the ute. i will get some picts on friday (when theres enough time to work on it)

Hey Pop, I'm not sure the canopy is original, the frame inside it is rusty, it wasn't exactly attached it was kind of sitting on the ute and held down with some hooks around some bars inside the tray, I think its a aftermarket job that was modified to fit, but if you want it you're more than welcome to it.

It's located in Shepparton currently if you still want it.

RE: my original post...........looks like you've got quite a good ute there
You'd be amazed at what it looks like once all that crap is cleaned out of it and you have a clean shell sitting there to start with.
From the pics it looks like it has been kept relatively dry and away from salt air.
Most of the areas that are normally completely rusted away and missing look quite sound.
I wish you all the best with the resto and am sure you will find this site invaluable when it comes to the amount of knowledge and advice to be found here.

Bloody handy for the odd part or 50 as I've found out since joining too

Keep up the good work.............Bob.

Hey guys I have some questions, just some thinking I've been doing while the engine is being fixed up as you can see from the photos it's been gutted of almost all its wiring, just wondering what sort of wiring is best for it and what size battery it requires apparently theres different voltages and stuff I don't understand :econfused:
