Wheel cylinders
Wheel cylinders
Gday
Im new here, so you will need to forgive my dumb arse questions. I'm sticking to the stock ek brake system at the minute and want to know if getting the original brake cylinders re-sleeved in stainless steel ( if theyre not too far gone) is a better option than buying the new ones from Rares.
Cheers

Hi again,
stainless sleeves are indeed an expensive proposition - many have done this and have had good results.
I know of others who have done this (including clutch) and believed the outlay to be a permanent fix...... only to find the fault returned....
We should support Rares - as they make available many spares to keep our old buses on the road..... however - one alternative may be a quick call to Bursons - I do know that they hold many spare parts for older vehicles in stock..... not sure about early wheel cylinders, though.....
frats,
Rosco

frats,

I've got stainless steel sleeves on mine.
I then went and got a replica set of cups custom made in stainless steel as well. These weren't an expensive item, and made sure that these didnt pit either.
Stainless steel cups and sleeves - I havent had any troubles to date with my brakes with this type of setup. Highly recommended.

I know a place that will re-sleeve FB/EK wheel cylinders in stainless and supply new cups for $48 each which is much cheaper than new repro wheel cylinders.
The cylinders are bored oversize,re-sleeved back to standard and you just use your original pistons and the supplied new cups.
Stainless doesn't "pit" from exposure to moisture absorbent brake fluid so the wheel cylinder itself should last forever in theory with only the periodical replacement of cups every 10 years or thereabouts.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.
Forgot to mention the $48 quote was about 2 years ago
but the price shouldn't be too much more than that now.
Contact:-
Kings Brake Service ( Phil King )
541 Peel St,
Tamworth NSW 2340
Didn't write his phone number down after I rang him for some reason
but I'm sure it would be in the yellow pages phone book if you looked on yellowpages online.
The quote for $48 was on 14/3/08.
Another cheap source for brake hoses at wholesale prices is to ring a bloke called Peter Hales on 07 38061067.
I bought a set of brake hoses from him via ebay in May '08 and they were very good and the price was near half that the major parts suppliers charge.
Hope that helps,
Terry.

Howdy,
I'm looking for the same thing. Just wondering if you'd spoken to Kings Brake Service yet and whether the pricing was somewhat similar?
It would also be handy to know if there was anyone in Melbourne who did this for a similar price?
I noticed (somewhere on the site) Ratbox (I think it was) was giving a piece of his mind in regards to the price of cylinders - does anyone know if he happened to find them cheaper anywhere?
Cheers,
Aaron.

Finally got around to chasing up prices, Kings are still reasonable at $50 p/cylinder re-sleeved plus $4 per cup. Only problem is courier costs. The nearest place to me (Ballarat) charges double that. Got another recommendation for Footscray Brake Service, (9689 2240) $59 for front and $ 47 rear, $ 3 per cup, you will also need to strip the cylinders. Probably will go with the Footscray place as its a bit closer to home, they're very switched on and friendly.

Don't need an expensive courier for wheel cylinders, box them up and whack 'em in the post,I didcplagarn wrote:Gday Aaron

Ive just picked up my brake parts from Footescray and I'm pretty happy. 4 cylinders re-sleeved, clean and shiny with new bleeders, new cups, New set of brake linings, a tube of rubber grease and drums machined (and a partridge in a pear tree) for about the same price as 4 new cylinders. I will send some pics if you want.
Cheers
