You want quick or you want cheap ?

You cant have both.

strip

Post by Kingaz »

SPL the cheapest way to strip the car is to buy paint stripper.

However this way is the most messy and tedious way to strip a car.

If you do go with the paint stripper be prepared to spend more than $50.00 as you will go through more than 3 4litre tins depending on how much paint is under the surface. Buy some plastic to put under the car as when your scrapping the paint goo goes everywhere (learn from others mistakes lol)

Easiest option get heaps of mates around with some little buckets filled with stripper but some cheap paint brushes and scrappers, mine took approx 3 full days of stripping to get to bare metal.

If you look at my build theres a few photos of the stripping process makes for some interesting photos.

Good luck its hard work but pays off and helps the wallet a bit

Cheers

Buy some cheap orbital sanders and 36 grit paper and start sanding!!!!

I stripped my roof, both guards and bonnet this way. Its cheap and depending on how many helpers it could be quick......
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

if you go this way, don't sand in the same spot for too long as it still heats the metal and can cause warping especially on the bigger flat panels like the roof and hood

Hope I don't offend.....
I'm with Devilrod......sand, sand and sand........ at the end of the day, you'll end up with less mess..... but a lot of dust - plug up vents etc so it doesn't block drain holes and apertures......

If there has been plastic fillers used - you will find that paint strippers will have little or no effect - sanding will - but I believe you can appreciate they will grind away much quicker than the metal around them.....

Paint strippers will dissolve putties which may not be what you are looking to do......
except if you want a complete bare metal strip....

One suggestion would be to do both...and it will save a lot of mess and make it a lot quicker......

Sand off as much as you can to get a flat surface - and finally use the strippers to remove what remains......

Just my thoughts...

Well that goes without saying..you HAVE to sand after stripping the old paint off. There's always the little hard flakey bits left over after using paint stripper and a good sanding prepares the metal for the etch primer better also. Oh, and one more thing, after using stripper WASH THE WHOLE CAR!!! with a small amount of dishwashing liquid added to warm water, (don't use your normal car wash as some of these have a wax or silicon in 'em...no good for the primer to go on later) the wash will stop the nasties eating the steel!
Have fun...I'm just about to do the same!!!

Scotty.

So what do you expect to spend on the completed car? If you only have $50 to strip it.
Do you have a plan on how the rebuild is going to be approached, or are you just wanting a body without paint.

Have you ever attempted a job like this before

Are all the rust repairs already done, and when you do have it stripped to bare metal how much do you have to spend on whatever you are going to put on the metal to seal and protect it from the elements.

Is the car garaged

Get a plan

And some idea of what order to do it in
This will make any job a little less painful.

If your "Mate" has a panel shop, why are you not asking him the best way to approach stripping the paint.
Especially if he is going to do rust and other work on it for you.

$1,000! to get the rust cut out and primer
Either your car has very little rust, or your mates rates will have to be about $5 an hour or less.

All the best with your project
