It is there to stop the roof drumming Ratbox, I wouldn't remove it but if its buggered I dont know what to replace it with - no doubt Dynamat would have a product available but it wouldn't be cheap.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

roof sheeting

you can buy sound deadener sheets from panelshop supply companies that you can cut out and stick on whatever shape you like. they are used alot for newer vehicles on boot floors and spare wheel wells.

I had a small section missing.

I reattached the areas that had dropped down using contact adhesive.

But I also had a small section missing.
I thought I would grab some from the parts car to re-use.
Unfortunately it was badly eroded and fell apart as I removed it.

Then going to use some from a parts commodore roof.
It had similar insulation to floor insulation.
But it had already been taken. This is what it should have looked like.

Probably end up using dynamat.

Be a bit carefull as there is only a small gap between the bow centre & the roof line (almost on the roof), remembering the original insulation was only approx 3mm thick.
The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.

I pulled mine out of my wagon because there was quite a bit of surface rust between the roof and the cardboard type stuff. Also because the cardboard stuff went above the steel hood bows, I ended up drilling the spot welds out of the two hoodbows on one side so I could get above them.I will have to tack weld these back in later.
