202 Tappet / Valve Ticking Noise

Post by DeadSled »

Hey everyone,

Last few months the 202 in my HJ Kingswood has been making this terrible ticking noise, mostly in the 3/4 acceleration range. I can't really go full acceleration because its too noisey and i don't yet know what it is.

It sounds like its maybe the valves or tappets or whatever, but i don't really know much about the valves and all that stuff so if anyone has any idea i'd really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Nick.

more than likely the tappets caused by either wear (not ajustable) lifters or low oil presure

A ticking noise is generally a valve train noise, most likely in the upper end.Take the tappet cover/rocker cover off and see if anything looks like it may be broken or loose.Eccessive upper end valve train clearance can create a ticking like sound

Are you running the later dual pivot non adjustable rockers or the earlier 186 type individually adjustable rockers?

Could be a lot of other things doing it like bent pushrod, worn through pushrod end to rocker shaft recess, buggered hydralic lifters etc.

Even PCV valves can give a tick like noise.

Camshaft/lifter noises are more like a clacking noise and bottom end noise is more like a dull knock lower down in the engine.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

My 186 in the HK has just this morning started to knock pretty badly, sounds to me like bottom end. Pretty sure it will be pulled out and replaced with another second hand cheepy  , Trev 8) .

Hm. Its a 202, so i don't think it'll have earlier 186 gear in it.

FB Mad its definately a ticking, not a dull knock or anything like that. I too guessed it as being valves or something related.

A guy from tafe said that he pulls the rocker cover off and tightens them up, with the engine running until its about to stall and thats when he knows their tight enough. Does this sound like a good theory to go by?

As far as PVC stuff goes, we've cut all the lines and blocked them. It definately made the engine run a bit nicer.

Just got the rocker cover off. Theres heaps of oil there, so i don't know if low oil pressure could be the candidate. Also, the bolts were all tight.. so thats not it either.

Hm.

I've two other heads here, a standard high compression head, but its missing half the parts.. or a complete 186 head thats a low compression, but has definately had some work done to it in the past.

If i swap the heads over, would that fix the problem?
