Surge Tank Install

Post by fxfjholden.com »

I have done some Internet Research on installing a surge tank. Here is a pic of the setup.

The fuel tank runs to the top of the surge tank via the lift pump and low pressure fuel filter. There's a return to the fuel tank from the side/top fitting on the surge tank.

The surge tank goes to the fuel rail from the low fitting via the EFI pump and high pressure filter. The fuel rail return goes to the top of the surge tank.

So you're feeding fuel from the fuel pump into the surge tank. This overflows back to the tank. The surge tank feeds the fuel rail. The regulator on the fuel rail sends excess back to the surge tank.

Some people have issues with the hot fuel from the rail being sent back to the surge tank - a valid concern in theory but in practice no-one worries. If you didn't do that and sent the rail excess back to the tank, you need a lift pump that can manage the greatest fuel demand the motor is going to have.

Don't worry about hose clamps if the steel lines and fittings have a small flare. I wouldn't use the clamps without a small flare to butt the clamp up against.

I dunno about the water trap. All you need is a plastic cheap filter on the lift pump side and the EFI high pressure filter.
Thoughts on this guys have I in theory connected it correctly?

The lift pump is a Bosch 0 580 254 910... 130... (5 Bar) (72psi) is this pump to powerful for a lift pump?
