Gear box idea's ?

Post by jazzar02 »

Well it is time to look for a gear box, I have a EK with a red 202, the enigne has mild up grades. Like a 350 holley carby, performance exhaust set-up and quad spark spark plugs. With the engine i plan to make around 250hp with more modifications down the track. I am looking at spending no more then $500 for a box. What would you reconmend ?

Need to know do you want auto or manual? Auto and some manuals will need a bigger tunnel. A jap 5 speed would be the go, but you're probably going to need to spend more than $500 to get all you need to fit it.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Buy a lotto ticket and hope you get lucky
Seriously though, 250hp is a lot for a 202 you would have to spend thousands to get that sort of HP so spend up on the gearbox at the same time. For autos, traumatics and powerglides can be built up to suit, I guess you couldn't go past a Supra 5 speed for a manual or a Toploader but that has no overdrive.
If you are putting a 250hp motor in the car you should be looking at a chassis kit from CRS. This will have the crossmembers for the gearbox too, you'll also need a new tunnel.

Yeah i know i will need to make the tunnel bigger but that's no problem. Also i was thinking of going a celica 5spd steel case one for strength. Bit i don't know where to get a bell housing to suit the motor and gear box.

seriously don't waste your time on the Celica box, i could sell you a celica bellhousing and all that stuff but i have two celica 5 speeds sitting in the shed both stuffed and thats behind a 202 that makes 140hp at the wheels ...... if your looking at 250hp theres no chance its going to last long!!

the supra box is however a fair bit stronger, its the box that usually gets put behind wild 202s and alot of older v8 conversions.....

also think about the diff .... you'll need either a commodore one or a 9 inch to handle that sort of power ...... if thats the case you'll probably need a custom made tailshaft so make sure you get all your bits first before you do it!
Regards,

Sammy.
