Grey Motor rebuild gasket set

Post by reddo »

Yo..
looks like i have to pull the motor out of my wagon and attack a few oil leaks..Motor runs great ..just wants to dribble oil all over the floor of the shed when its running..

Just wandering.....................

In this day and age of cheap Chinese, Korean reproductions Whats the best brand of gasket set to buy??.. anyone has any bad experiences with shit gaskets ????
Whats the average price for a gasket set.. ???
Can anyone recommend the best place to get one from around Newcastle .????

I seriously doubt i could be a new old stock set from anywhere.??

I will probably start by calling Rare spares.... or will the local repco .. Auto one places have a set.???
May as well bung in a set of welsh plugs while i am at it. Will check manual for correct sizes... ... thats if they get a mention in the manual ???

Try Repco -
ACL Head gasket AD880
ACL Exhaust gasket JE359
ACL Tappet cover JM736
ACL Exhaust flange JE359
The only reason for time is so everything dosen't happen at once.

They don't mention welsh plug sizes in the manual  , you will need 1" 5/8 for the 3 in the side of the block and 1 in the back behind the fly wheel, Trev 8) .

Hey Reddo

anywhere beetween $80 -$120 hard to tell Repco and there prices are strange $16 for a front uni (Spicer) $35 14 months later

$35 is not a lot of coin but 100%+ increase in 14 months is BS

Make sure you get the Imerial welsh plugs not the metric equivelent

Thanks dudes

Thanks for the replys
I stuck that post up today while i was at work planning on what to work on tonight.........
called in at "The local auto parts blokes" near my place on the way.

Bottom end overhaul kit... or what they call "Grey motor conversion kit" = $39.00. Kit does not include timing cover oil seal ( crankshaft seal)... But he has the the seals there for $5.00ea.
Top end overhaul kit ( VRS Kit) $45.

I wasnt sure where the oil was coming from so the first job tonight was drop the 2 splash pans off from under the front of the motor and wipe any oil off .... start her up.. and watch for leaks. First thing i noticed was the centre bottom bolt on the timing cover in behind the harmonic balance was about 4 turns from being tightened up.
Fixed that and about 4 other bolts across the bottom of the timing cover that where finger tight.... wipe it all down again and... Bingo... no more oil leaks
Bloody hard trying ta drink a stubby laying on you back under a car with a torch for 10 minutes waiting for oil leaks ta start up and weep.
When i was satisfied i had cured the problem i managed to celebrate by smacking another 1/2 dozen into me.

Just gotta throw out the front engine mount that has rubber the consistency of a Jelly. engine oil has well and truely stuffed it.... But hey... a lot easier job than ripping out the motor....

Oh yeah... the welsh plugs look like they have been done not that long ago. Wouldnt mind betting the one down the back of the block hasnt been touched
