paint code?

Post by Aussy Edo »

Hi Folks,i saw an ad on telly for autobarn saying they could mix up any paint so i took my paint code down to them(0244) Shalimar blue, for my 61 model and they couldnt do it,said somethin like it might have a new code by a different paint manufacture or somethin along those lines,i switched off after i heard the first excuse.Does any one know any different as to whether or not the codes have changed over the years or should i be just going straight to a paint distributor?

Hi Edo,
I may very well be wrong here - but I know my EK was painted in Dulon (Dulux) - we must remember that this was done nearly 50 years ago and paint technology has changed many times over since then.
Twenty years ago it was still possible for me to get Dulon in my 585 format - but it became frightfully expensive and many of us dediced to have the colour "matched" and used an alternative maker - I suppose it would be "fair" to say that only Dulon would be an exact match for Dulon.... however.....

Most specialist suppliers these days should have access to older codes and should have the reciprocative conversion - to supply fairly closely with the original...

There probably would be some "trade off" due to the use of different bases and materials - but this should be compensated for by the specialist.... or more to the point - the industrial chemist under consultation/hire...

In relation to Autobarn - yes, I do believe what you have been informed to be correct - I feel that there would not be references available to whoever supplies their paint (and it would not be Autobarn - they are a retail outlet) as to our original codes - you will find this quite common - even to the point of getting replacement hoses, wiper blades, light bulbs etc, etc..... our models are no longer listed.... there of course would be the rare occasion where a colour has been retained for use in a more modern vehicle - others on this forum may very well know of this occurence.....

My paint supplier now tells me that they have the ability to "match" any colour.... by computer - as long as they are supplied the "original" sample - I think you can appreciate that over all these years, Edo - our paint has probably changed colour hue - even that which has not been exposed to sunlight - the simple process of breaking down over time will change the hue - to some, this degree would be almost undetectable - to others, like the proverbial...... we all "see" colours differently - and they do not actually contain any "colour" - it is the relflected light which causes us to "see" colour - reflected from the pigment of the paint....... getting "deep" sorry - and ..... no pun intended.....

Suggestion - if you want to "match" your Shalimar Blue - I would suggest taking something which still retains the "factory" paint and block it down to remove any oxidisation - this should reveal the "true" pigment within...... a reputable paint specialist should be able to computer match this with just about any paint system of your choice - be it acrylic, 2K or even enamel.......

You probably need to "chat" to a specialist and "pick their brains" a bit - I have offered you some "information" to use when you make this approach....

and....

please consider that just about all paint will "dry" to a different hue..... do not be fooled into believing that the supplied colour in liquid form is going to be the "end" result - again a reputable specialist should be well and truly "versed" in this......

frats,
Rosco

pm me if you need more....

Hi Edo, I got my paint from a proper paint supplier (Preston motors Dandenong), and the bloke there found the code started with an extra "0" on the front, so mine was 9700 now in their book it's "09700", give this a try, Trev 8) .
