Con rod nuts

Twas assemblin a grey motor yesterday and when it came to torquing the con rod nuts I stripped 2, so today on my travels I went to a nut n bolt joint and after about 10 mins of looking and a couple of questions I was told, " you won't get new ones, they don't make them"

I can't believe this is true

, so I went to an engine reco place and the bloke on the other side of the jump went out the back and took a couple off an old rod for me, life saver

.
Has anyone herd of this, or have I been hornswaggled?

Hard to say, but they sure aren't making grey's no more are they Trev. Soooooo technically he's right, surely they are a standard size nut?

I know my old purple EK we had trouble getting big end bearings.

Sounds like the first joint you went to were too lazy to help you Trev.You didn't arrive there 5 minutes before closing time did ya??

From memory they are a UNF thread but unsure as to what size.I'm sure any reputable engine shop should have had them.Only get them in high tensile grade ( not mild steel) and I'm sure they'd do the job as good as any original conrod nut would.

If you need anymore give me a yell,I've got a spare FX block here with genuine nuts on the conrods if you want some.

Let me know if you need some Trev, I can rat some from the FX block I've got here if you need 'em.

The first shop may have been right if they are 11/32.It's probably not an often used size nowdays.

Trev get your torque wrench checked if you are stripping them
I snaped 3 rod bolts on a rebuild before I realised the wrench was out (I am a slow learner)

Craig, all the others torqued up no probs so it was just a couple of dodgy nuts, good thinking though

, you might be able to be fooled 3 times but not 4

But could it not be a simple case of replacing nut & bolt - ARP for example
