Con rod nuts

Post by Trev »

Twas assemblin a grey motor yesterday and when it came to torquing the con rod nuts I stripped 2, so today on my travels I went to a nut n bolt joint and after about 10 mins of looking and a couple of questions I was told, " you won't get new ones, they don't make them" .
I can't believe this is true  , so I went to an engine reco place and the bloke on the other side of the jump went out the back and took a couple off an old rod for me, life saver :D .
Has anyone herd of this, or have I been hornswaggled? , Trev 8) .

Hard to say, but they sure aren't making grey's no more are they Trev. Soooooo technically he's right, surely they are a standard size nut?

I know my old purple EK we had trouble getting big end bearings.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Sounds like the first joint you went to were too lazy to help you Trev. You didn't arrive there 5 minutes before closing time did ya??

From memory they are a UNF thread but unsure as to what size.I'm sure any reputable engine shop should have had them.Only get them in high tensile grade ( not mild steel) and I'm sure they'd do the job as good as any original conrod nut would.

If you need anymore give me a yell,I've got a spare FX block here with genuine nuts on the conrods if you want some.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

Let me know if you need some Trev, I can rat some from the FX block I've got here if you need 'em.

The first shop may have been right if they are 11/32.It's probably not an often used size nowdays.

Trev get your torque wrench checked if you are stripping them
I snaped 3 rod bolts on a rebuild before I realised the wrench was out (I am a slow learner)

Craig, all the others torqued up no probs so it was just a couple of dodgy nuts, good thinking though :D , you might be able to be fooled 3 times but not 4   , Trev 8) .

just a couple of dodgy nuts
Every mans nightmare
But could it not be a simple case of replacing nut & bolt - ARP for example
