handbrake- setting up on original drum brakes
Hey guys, sent this post a few months ago (May). Finally got around to it again. I have got the photo this time and maybe you guys can shed some light on the issue. I'm not sure how to use the lobe thingy marked with a red arrow in the photo. I'm sure it's the reason I can't seem to get much tension in my handbrake. Any way here is the picture...

That pic is the original rear drum setup and is a pic of the left rear assembly.
I can't exactly remember whether that adjuster works on a cam adjusting arrangement or similar but by undoing the locknut and turning the adjuster it moves the actuater towards the front brake shoe and reduces the freeplay when the handbrake is applied ( or similar type description ).
I have to adjust mine as well soon to try and get my handbrake working better but waiting for my laziness to dissipate so I can get off my butt and do it
Late at night ATM for an old fart like me so will try a more accurate, less lack-of-sleep affected description for you tomorrow.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.
Had a lookey see at the GMH Shop Manual for FB I have here at home.
That adjuster is an eccentric pivot bolt and works pretty much how I described it last night, if how I described it made any sense that is.
I'll type up the handbrake acuating lever adjustment description from the manual for you when I get home tonight if that helps. It'll take me a while as I'm a one finger at a time typist and there is a fair bit to type up.

Its gonna take too bloody long to type from the description in the shop manual and I'm not able to scan the page showing the description and pictures so will basically describe here how to do the adjustment.
First, jack up car and place jack stands under rear axle assembly for safety sake ( never trust the jack only)
1. Disconnect the clevis pin from the handbrake cable equalizer ( the mechanism under the floor where the front handbrake cable meets the rear brake cable ) so that the rear brake cable basically has no tension on it and is free.
2. Adjust brakes on all four wheels.
3.Remove rear brake drums, undo the locknut on the eccentric pivot bolt ( the bolt where your red arrow points to in the pic of yours ) and turn the eccentric pivot bolt ( the bolt that the locknut goes on and has two flat sides ) to the clockwise position ( looking at it ) on the Right hand brake assembly and counter clockwise on the Left hand brake assembly until the eccessive clearance ( or freeplay ) between the strut ( or actuator ) and the primary brake shoe ( front shoe ) is gone.
4. Reinstall clevis pin to handbrake cable equalizer and adjust handbrake cable at the adjustment point on this equalizer.
Hope this info helps.
If you are more confused now don't worry as I think I confused myself just writing it

Re: handbrake- setting up on original drum brakes
Been looking for this info for ages...
I think the fact that we can go back and find relevant information from conversations that took place yrs ago is just gold

My son's been looking for info on his HR but can't find anything remotely close to information provided on the FB/EK forum.

For all the knockers out there who cry about the for sale sections etc having an auto prune set up - take heed. We dont have unlimited bandwidth so we trim where we can and leave the stuff we consider more important to fester in cyberspace .MyEKisdriven wrote:Been looking for this info for ages...

No need to thank us - because that hardly ever happens and we are starting to become strangely attracted to abuse

I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Great to see someone using the "search" the way its designed for
.
The members on this forum are some of the most helpful people I've come across on any forum, although there are a few that have gone missing because of some of the petty arguments that start up from time to time.
Ignore that and we've still got a great forum
