Drain the compressor at the bottom before using, plug underneath.
Make sure there is no pressure in the system first.

Should also have a moisture trap to trap water when using.

I know about the release under the compressor etc (thanks Finny), but i'm still getting water?

I have heard, I think, about lifting the lines high and putting a trap at a low point, or something like that.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

what you need is a presure regulator, water seperator,,,about 50-100 dollars at most spray shops or tool shops,, wont stop water with out one and it will leave blisters in your paint,,draining the tank just stops rusting in the tank,,,,you can leave the drain open slightly just to help water dribble out,, but a seperator is a must
when they start building them like that again i will buy a new car of them

As said a water seperator - as part of pressure regulator or separate to is a must, either at the gun or the tank depending on what you buy, you often see them on eBay at a reasonable price.
The water comes from the tank into the pressure hose, a water seperator at a low point (say the tank) & lifting the line high would stop any water that did get past the separater.

Probably many ways & opinions on how to do it & what to use, it all depends on how serious you want to get.
