dragways

Post by Dee »

Hello much informed people.

I am hoping to finally get some sports wheels for my car.
I would like to fit 5 spoked dragways, but know very little about what I am looking for.

At the moment I am considering 14" x 6" dragways - I have always believed them to be my favorite for early Holdens.

Do these wheels have any problems with getting out of "true"?
And what have people found with the quality of chrome the company uses.

My car has a HR disc front end, HR drum rear end, 179/186, 4 speed manual and a 3:08 diff centre.

I have heard that the HR track is just a little wider than the original EK and don't want any issue with scrubbing the guards - I do not want to have to modifiy my car's body at all.

I don't have a clue about what to ask for when it comes to offset but only want to fit up to 205 tyres.

I would like to go up to 14" diameter wheels as I feel the 13" dragways look a little "small" - no offence to those who have them.

I may be able to get in touch through a contact with a retailer who can sell me them new at a pretty good price, but don't want to order incorrect wheels - I have read some tales of those on this forum who have had bad experiences when it has come to replacement wheels.

Having said that, I don't know what sort of a price I am looking at per wheel or what else I will need to fit them to my car.

Hoping people on this forum will be able to "steer" me in the right direction - I'm running totally blind to any of this.

thanks for any help,

Dee

I had 13x7's on mine early days, front 205's fit fine, rear 225's hit the guard when I went over a speed hump, probably would have fit if the off set was set up properly or LC/LJ torana diff was used. And it was before my car was lowered as much as it is now.
The problem with buying them (mags) off ebay is you don't get to choose the correct offset, the problem with buying them new is they cost an arm and a leg but they will fit rite, Trev 8) .

price of dragways are a joke $400 odd per rim, i can get polished hallibrands only prob is they only come in &*#@ or GM stud pattern for about $250 per rim
i remember when building the ute years ago i bought centreline billet rims custom order early holden stud pattern for less than what i would have paid for dragways :?

I agree Rat they are a tad overpriced....

Dee it all comes down to getting the right offset when purchasing, as Trev said secondhand you'll not get that choice. Plus there is a chance the finish may be showing its age too.
Speed and Style........... One day I'll get the speed bit.

Yep, agree also with Rat and Dr.Dragway Engineering's prices for their wheels have always been very high when compared to others.
I can't think what to write here so this will do.

To answer some of your question Dee, here's some wheel track specs for HR and FB/EK.

HR front wheel track..... 53.9 inches
HR rear wheel track...... 54.9 inches

FB/EK front wheel track...54.5 inches
Rear FB/EK wheel track same as front.

So HR FRONT ended FB/EK will have a 0.6 inch narrower track (15.24 mm ) than standard FB/EK

and

HR REAR ended FB/EK will have a .4 inch wider track ( 10.16 mm ) than standard FB/EK.

That's providing the above info which I found on the net is correct.

From your figures Terry the Hr front is 1.4 inch narrower than EK

Thanks for your help everyone.
I did expect to be facing a big outlay for them, they sure are expensive - but to me look just the bees.
I will have to try the tyre people as well - I'm not sure what will fit properly using 14" rims - I don't want to go over 6" wide.
Answer to your question, Karsten - no, my car is not lowered - but using the original HR front springs in my EK, it gives it that look - I think the HR springs were shorter than the original EK - anyone know more about this?

I have over-rider springs on the rear which lift the back up a bit - not that anyone would notice - they are there for towing purposes.

I suppose it is now time to talk with Dragway - they should have an idea as to what offset will be needed.

Thanks for your help everyone - Lulu, hope your hubby gets his way - I'm sure you'll reap the reward - but we are all different - Dragways just seem to suit early Holdens to me.

Has anyone got a pic of 14" Dragways on an FB or EK?
and
is there another wheel manufacturer who produces something similar - I think Thommo had some at Forbes a few years ago - I know they were 13"s but they looked very cool - if they are considerably cheaper I'll have a better chance of having this finance approved.

I'll post up a reply from Mr Dragway after I get his response.

I am now going to have to convince my financier that the outlay is warranted.

That might be the tricky bit- never mind offsets and tyre sizes.

thanks again for all replies.
