4 inchs

Post by matchew »

just thought i would ask this question before i went and bought my lowering blocks, has anyone fitted 4 inch lowering blocks to an ek, if so did they need to do any mods to the car like getting rid of bump stops or raising the tail shaft hump, and if there is any pics that would also be much appreciated
cheers matty.

I fitted two inch lowering blocks to standard 4 leaf sedan springs and had to shorten bump stops about an inch or so.Didn't have to do any other mods but ATM I'm only running standard 13 inch rims.

I'd guess 4 inch drop may need more mods but will leave that answer to those that have done it.

Changing wheel size will not alter suspension height or travel. It will only alter ground clearance height.
In saying that, if you lower the car and fit larger diameter wheels, wheel arch clearance becomes less, so wheel scrub will occur.
Wheel size increase and a lower profile tyre will keep nominal wheel to tyre size ratio of the 13, but that profile would have to be in the 50 to 55 series depending on the width if you were to run the 14's.

Confused you yet................ :)

I would reccomend that you DON'T use 4" lowering blocks in any car

If you want to lower the car it is much better to get your leaves re-set by a springworks place. I honestly think using blocks the maximum you should go is 2".

just my opinion tho'

I personally wouldn't use 4" blocks. Mine runs 2" blocks and flipped leaf.

thanks for the replys, and yeah i already new about the wheel thing having worked as a tyre fitter and wheel aligner for 2 years, and i do agree with what you guys are saying sort off, but my hg ran 3 inch blocks no probs and that was for three years as a daily, and my mates xp has 3 and a half inch blocks again no probs, and when i asked a proffesional suspension place he guided me away from reset leaves for the fact that if you get defected you have to get them set again which would suck. so im guessin no ones done 4 inchs, so no one can answer my question :(

My opinion is that if you had standard 4 leaf sedan springs with a 4 inch lowering block you would find that your diff would be hard against your bump stops so basically you would have little or no suspension.

To gain some suspension travel you would have to remove a fair bit of the bump stop rubber and add extra leaves to firm up the spring rate and heavier duty shocks as well.

If you reset your springs, and get defected, just fit some standard springs again to get the defect lifted.

Then refit the reset springs and wait to be defected again

another prob i can see with 4" blocks is it's gunna bring the bottom of the U bolts and springs very close to the ground, i usually go with DR's method flipped leaves and a 1.5"-2.5" blocks

From memory your wagon should have more than 4 leaves.

Guessing here but I think wagons had 5 leaves ( shop manual is up in shed so can't confirm )

Yep,thats another prob ratbox  , my U bolt nuts are only about 3 inch from the ground with 2 inch lowering blocks.

4 inch blocks would be very close to scraping the road.

The advantage for 4" blocks, is you can make 2 pairs of 2' inch blocks, sell a pair and get your money back. :D :D :D

For mine I flipped the short leaf from the bottom of the leaf pack and placed it so it was curving the oppposite direction to the other leaves, then placed in a vice and did the vice up till I could put the bolt back.
Make sense?
