high level LED brake light - sedan

Post by rosco »

Hi all,
finished another little project a couple of days ago and thought it time to write it up and post some pix.

I don't know if these are already available, but I decided to make a project out of it and make mine custom for my application.

You will recall that I have fitted two strips of 30 super-bright LED's to my luggage compartment.

Further to their use for lighting, I pondered on fitting some red ones for a rear window brake light.................. not available.

So.................. fabricated some plastic and perspex to make one as descreetl as possible yet effective.

Purchased some 3mm red perspex at the length of the strip and some black matt plastic to construct a "box"......... don't bother - it ends up as large as a commercial one.

I wanted to fit it without drilling any holes - but had to suffer just one - for wiring.

Found that by using some stainless steel strip, I was able to fabricate some clips which held the LED strip against the rear window by bending them slightly in a dog-leg and slipping them down between the window glass and rubber (like the venetian blinds are fitted).

Cut the red perspex to shape - the same size as the strip and found that the clips held the assembly quite well to the window.
Had to use some stirps of black plastic to fill the gaps and avoid the bright white light from showing up around the assembly - held this all in place with Sikaflex 221.
Drilled a 3 mm hole into the rear deck - immediately under the rubber and this emerges central above the support brace under the rear of the deck - it was easy then to run the leads across to the r/hs of the boot and connect up to the loom.
I drilled a small hole in the loom retaining clip and "earthed" the light to this.
I spliced the yellow brake light lead in the loom and - that's it.
