What type of welder?

Post by Dave »

Just wanting some feedback on what type of welders you guys are using these days for rust repair work. Years ago oxy-acetylene was the only option and this was what I use to use. Wondering wether everyone now uses mig welders and like to know how much you have to pay for one, and what to look for, suggested brands etc. I bought a gasless mig a few years ago but it seems to be a bit of a toy and only good for welding shs and even then very hard to get a neat weld. Any comments appreciated.

Hey dave would think most people would prefer the oxy option you can dolly the welds while they are hot making the surface nice and flat.Just tak with the mig.Having said that i personally use just the mig these days and have no probs at all even when presented with the thinnest of metals.Sounds like you may want to weld some heavy gauge from time to time. The welder i bought will do both with ease, still very mobile and set me back about $1400 with reg, bottle, helmet and wire ready to go.Its only a little industrial but it works great.

Hey Dave,

I've got a MIG O MAG 195, good for light panel stuff and can also handle heavy duty stuff also.
Mind you, you certainly don't need something this big to do the job.

Hey C/B, you're spoiled, look at the size of your compressor  Iam impressed.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

I have a Tansmig 35 on gas. It's middle of the range model in that there are cheaper ones and more expensive ones. See here for some more info http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... highlight=welder

It will be used for all the work on my EK. See here for some 'action' pics http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... 9&start=15

Hey stewart those transmigs are great aswell. If they had them in stock when i got mine thats what i would have come home with instead of the one i got.
Yeh malcolm decided to splurge a bit with the compressor.Thats 20cfm,4 piston.Needed to run for airlines so it had to be big.

mig - compressor

Post by rosco »

Hi Dave,
'spose everyone is wanting to know what I stuff up all my welding with.
Mine is a Trans Mig 215 - was recommended by the bloke who ran the course for what I wanted...............it has sixteen settings plus the ability to run a CO2 torch using a separate connection.........

I'd like to see someone who can "weld" use it............ I'm almost useless...
Can't tell you how many angle grinders I have worn out............ bit embarrassed to even think by counting................

CB - I'm looking ill - wife says I have turned green since seeing your compressor last night.......... bet that little sucker doesn't even know you're spraying paint............. bit like an itch getting scratched with a wire brush.....

frats,
Rosco

Dave, don't skimp on the MIG if you buy one, I bought a cheap one and thought for years I was crap at welding. I got hold of a decent one last year and discovered I wasn't so bad after all.

I have a Lincoln 170 - small enough to tuck under your arm and carry up a ladder and grunty enough to blow holes in 3mm plate - can run gas or gasless , best thing since canned piss :D
Have had it for years now and had no trouble with it
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.
