V8 trimatic with no drive ?

Post by Harko »

Hey all .
Ive been playing with a HZ pano on the side and am having drama's with the trimatic .
I bought the car with a stuffed trimatic and replaced it with what was thought to be a great one but it doesnt send any drive - select any gears and I though some of you could shed some light on why a trimatic could do this .
My mechanical thinking says it could be either that I didnt get the stall converter in its correct position / although I dont think the gearbox would bolt all the way home if thats the case .
Or the stall convertor is stuffed .

Any help , urgent

Probably stating the obvious, but ....
Did you fill the convertor before putting it on?
On the first start after installing the trans did you run it through every gear then check the fluid level?

Um nup  Do you think thats definitely the prob , and I guess my way out is to open it up far enough to fill it through a tube or something :x .

I don't think you have to fill the converter before fitting but it helps, it's been a couple of years since I fitted mine. I can remember being trapped once before with having too little trans fluid and no drive.
There is nothing in the HQ service manual about refitting the trans or how much fluid goes in.

OK good on ya Stinky , I guess I'll have to ring a trans place and go from there .
Hey thanks for the quick reply ,I was just about to go out and start unbolting it again but checked here first .
The TH700 I slotted behind a red motor I didnt fill either ,They both werent dry but were low enough to lay the convertors on their backs without spilling any oil.
I'll let you know how I go .

OK could have removed it anyways apparently Trimatics will click in 3 times as you line up the convertor , I only clicked once
After starting the engine I gave it a good rev a held the revs up until the engine seemed to seize ,I eventually got it to turn again but not by hand thats for sure .
It seemed to free itself up but once it got warm again it would stall ,Id hear what seemed to be the fan belt slipping "BUT"
Apparently if the converter didnt click home three times the stator inside the convertor was beeing pushed under tension and once the engine started it stuffs the convertor then will stall the engine as it stuffs the box .

When I found all this out I immediately said to the guy WOW Ive never heard of that before ,He said well dont be ashamed you would have to be the 400 millionth person who has came in with the same query
C4s are worse for it ...

Then I thought Ive put heaps of auto's in over the years I must have been lucky...
Its good to learn something new though :D 8) I know where all the trimatics have gone
