With your one piece tailgate wouldn't you be better off with gas struts mate ????
When you're faced with an unpleasant task that you really don't want to do, sometimes you just have to dig deep down inside and somehow find the patience to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Didn’t think they’d be strong enough.
At least the mechanical struts will hold.

I put gas struts on the wagon tailgate... bit lighter than yours, but easy bolt-up. The gas strut mob asked me to weigh the tailgate, so I used a fishing scale. They then set the pressure on the struts to suit the weight. It was pretty close - the tailgate stays wherever I put it, but doesn't try to smack me in the mouth when I open it. Lot easier than doing the two arm shuffle to move the little clicky latches on the original struts.

Cheers,
