Sandblaster Mod’s

Post by 59wagon »

I bought a sandblast cabinet a few months ago and after a bit of use, I found some annoying traits. I got it from a Hare & Forbes sale, but I think you can get the same product from a few different retailers with a different sticker on it. I’ve noticed a few people on the forum have got sandblasters so, if you’re interested in what I modified, read on.
The two biggest issues were dust and lack of light. The dust would come out of almost every join and leave a haze in the shed, as well as ruining visibility in the cabinet. The flouro light provided made hardly any difference - I could see better by squinting my eyes.
I went on the interweb and found heaps of YouTube videos for modifying and got my ideas from there.
First, I fitted rivnuts (nutserts, whatever) to allow quicker removal & installation of the window when it needs replacing. Otherwise you need ape long arms to hold the nuts on the inside as well as the hassle of dropping them into the sand below.

Image

I then pulled the whole cabinet apart and when I put it back together I put sealant in every seam to make it airtight. I also added extra foam strip to the door opening as it wasn’t sealing well.
While it was apart, I painted all of the inside upper section with cheap gloss white paint for better visibility, and modified the air inlet to make it the outlet by closing off the top section of the baffle.

Image

For the air inlet, which was originally the outlet, I folded up a baffle and riveted it on. The idea is that this controls the flow of dust across the cabinet better.

Image

You can also see above the two cheap 150W floodlights I installed.

I bought a cyclone dust separator off eBay, a plastic 20 litre bucket with a sealing lid, some pool hose and pvc tube and fittings. With a bit of fabrication, I came up with this, connected to my old vacuum cleaner.

Image

The reason for the cyclone is to minimise the amount of dust that gets through to the vacuum cleaner and clogging up the filter too often.

Then installed a double power point for the lights and vacuum cleaner.

Image

Last was a high tech airflow controller flap. This was made from the bit of plastic left over from drilling a hole in the bucket lid.

Image

Image

With the flap fully open it sucks quite well

Image

and with the flap at maximum restriction it makes the gloves get an erection

Image

I know the cabinet’s sealing well because when I tried blocking off the inlet completely, the metal sides and window started sucking in and the vacuum cleaner worked up to a high pitched scream.

I also added some cheap castors for rolling it around the shed

Image

I’m really pleased with the outcome. I can now easily see what I’m doing and there’s no dust at all on the outside. After about 10 minutes of blasting, I checked the bucket to find about 3/4 of a cup of dust and there was nothing in the vacuum cleaner and the filter was still clean.

Now, back to car stuff Image

Whoops. Anyone know how to move this thread to “General discussion ...” area? I’ve accidentally put it in the For Sale section.

Hi Paul, yeh I read your build a while back and it sounds great, but the pictures don’t come up, so I don’t believe you 😂 I’ll need to pop in when I’m up that way to have a look.
Looking forward to the weekend, though I can’t make some of it. Has a time and place been set for Friday night?

Cheers,

John

These are a good set of mods - many thanks for typing it up  .

I too bought a Hare and Forbes unit. Mine is slightly different - air inlet is from the blasting hose only. I added castors, some sealing rubber on the door, and some strongbacks on the door connectors. Helped a lot with the dust blowing out, though I like the idea of the vaccum and cyclone extractor.

One trick I learnt is that the plastic door/window gets grit blasted quickly from riccochets, and becomes opaque. The plastic is just expensive enough to be annoying. I buy contact film (the stuff you wrap kids schoolbooks in to stop squashed bananas ruining the books in their bags) and apply some to the inside of the window. Once it is opaque, I strip it off and put a new layer of the contact film on. A lot cheaper than new perspex.

My air compressor is a moderate size, and I find that I run out of air waaay too quickly. Has anyone sourced smaller ceramic nozzles to try and reduce air consumption?

Cheers,

That’s a great idea with the contact film, Harv. The unit came with some spare plastic covers with double sided tape, and I had some glass sheets cut for when they run out, but I reckon the contact film will be cheaper.
Yep, it sure uses a lot of air. I’ve got a big 3 phase mofo compressor that keeps up fine, but it kicks in heaps more than any air tools I use. Not sure if you can get smaller nozzles, but one other mod I’m considering is a foot pedal and different gun.
The foot pedal looks inviting as it saves hand fatigue and you can manoeuvre the gun a bit better.
The guns I’ve seen used have the blast media inlet coming in at a larger angle to the gun rather than the 90° supplied and this provides an easier flow path. These only need the pressure set at about 40-50psi, rather than the 90 or so for the original setup. The dollars start to add up, but I guess it depends on how often and for how long you use the unit that justify the spend.

Cheers,

John
