Red 5 speed in Van

Post by thropzed »

Howdy, I've got a windowless panel van running a 192 red with celica 5 speed. The problem I'm having is that there seems to be alot of up and down motion in the gearbox causing it to hit against the floor. This dosen't bother me too much but my passengers are a little startled by it all. Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks Thropzed
Ps Hemi's Van looks Kooool!!!

I asume the gearbox is bolted to the crossmember!
ie: Two mounts on the motor, one on the box.

Yes Thommo, All the mounts are intact, The only one that worries me is the gearbox mount as this seems to have quite a bit of play, about half an inch in any dirrection. Do you think replacing this mount be solving or half solving the problem.

Is it where it bolts to the box,
or where it bolts to the crossmember,
or is the rubber stuffed in the mount itself.
If it moves around, it shouldn't be hard to see where the problem is.

I think I'll start with changing the gearbox mount and go from there.
Thanks Thommo for your input, Its the first EK I've had with a red motor so its all new to me. Grey power rules

I'd only be guessing but I think your gearbox mount sounds like it is cactus....

Thanks Smooth, I have now ordered a new gearbox mount from rare spares and I spoke with Jeff Dellow and he is having a look to see if he has any inserts left and will contact. This is my last mechanical problem before I start on kitting out the interior of the VAN for the Nats next year. I hope to see everyone there as I couldn't make it this year what with Wintersun and the Winter drag nationals and two rugrats. The photo's posted by everyone has been great and looks to have been a sensational weekend. I know we had a couple of cars from QLD.
Thanks once again

Don't get me wrong YEPRAT1 the 5 speed is beautiful to drive, I think it is all in the set up. I have spoken to quite a few people regarding this and the gearbox crossmember seems to be crucial in the way its set up. CRS do a bolt on crossmember that should put all your fears to bed. Depending on which mount you use the crossmember is made to fit the mount, lol, it sounds like I know what I'm talking about. The open highway is where the 5 speed shines as fuel consumption goes way down and depending on your diff ratio as well

I agree with Devilrod,I had a similar problem myself a few years ago, although it was in an FX,the mount looked ok but on closer inspection was found to be RS allowing gearbox to knock on the floor. Sounds like you already have the problem sorted though, hopefully :D
