Fitting door striker plates

Post by parisian62 »

What's the best way to fit up a door striker plate so that it meets the door lock? Everytime I try and fit mine I end up not being able to open the door for half an hour...

I'm just about to lose it with this one....

Is it the striker plate Stewart or is the lock defective.
I guess the question is did it work when you first opened the door on "old timer"?

It's a pretty simple mechanism so I don't think it's that. All the door strikers had already been taken off before I got it.

Update...3 out of 4 done... :D...I think...

...after struggling with the drivers front door for half an hour I thought I'd try the drivers rear door. Got it done in about 5 minutes  then did passenger rear in about the same time. So decided to try drivers front door...again it wouldn't open from the outside handle but it will open with the inside handle...

You get another free beer from me Tim at the next Nats... I think I have the door handles mixed up...   will check this on the weekend.

Some other tips for this job...
*make sure both the door stirker plate and door mechanism has dry lube
*when closing the door you can carefully check whether the mechanism lines up with the striker plate
*the door striker plate has quite a lot of 'play' and can be rotated clock and anti clock wise (thanks Dave)
*when opending the door make sure the door isn't locked
*and last but not least make sure you have the correct handles on the correct doors as the botton push rods are different lengths...

Tim can you remember if the longer rods are on the front or rear doors?

Yep I had the handles on the wrong way... ...but...there is always a but...

I can't spin the locking mechanism on the outside of the door 'freely' with the button pressed in and the door isn't locked. The mechansim will turn but it 'clicks' over.... :econfused: I'm not game to shut the door...
