Generator light constantly on.

Post by skin_dog »

So i've just bought this EK and the guy i bought it from told me that the generator was stuffed and supplied me with a working one.
Got the car home and changed them over. No difference, light is still on. So i began to think regulator then.
Called Frankston Autobarn and David (such a helpful dude) sold me an RE55 regulator replacement thingy for around $40.
Earthed the body of it and attached the D wire to the D+ terminal and the F wire to the other one. Still no result.
So i put the original regulator back in, scratched my head, then realised i was out of ideas.
Oh and before, during, and after this entire process my little test light would only light up on the B terminal of the regulator. I also tried it on the generator terminals and got no light.

Help me please!

Get yourself a multimeter and test the output off the back of the generator so you can rule the generator in or out

You should seriously consider an alternator conversion later down the track.

Thanks Mick, i was going to go with the conversion but i read something on here that made me think twice.
Basically i like the fact a generator is self-serviceable as apposed to replacing or paying to have an alternator re-co'd.
I'll get my hands on a multimeter and see how we go....
Cheers mate.

I've got one from a v8 commodore (early) 85 amp and don't get any problems from it.
The bracket to do the conversion is now available on ebay unless you want to just make up your own.
There's a bit of info here http://holdenpaedia.oldholden.com/Gener ... Conversion
and there may be a thread on here about it somewhere.
The good thing about these is as it's a bosch one, parts are available quite easily (bearings, regulator (inc. brushes), etc),
so they are still very serviceable.
It will also allow the use of H4 lights - I haven't even put relays into mine yet and they're still as bright as a new car.
As a side note i took some lucas semi-sealed headlights and removed the glass from the reflector, then replaced the H4 conversion glass with the lucas ones - looks standard, performs brilliantly.

Here are the brackets - looks like they're running out though
