Headers for black 202
Headers for black 202
Hi all.
New problem, but not really a major one, just one I'd like to sort out eventually. I'm using a stock tri-y design header suited for a 3.3 with 12 port head and EFI. I had to modify the outer Y so as to get it past the steering idler. It does, but only just. However, at full lock left (how many left hand U-turns do you do?), the idler contacts the outer pipe, which I diverted in and down to get past the idler. I know I'm not the first bloke to put an injected 3.3 in an FB/EK, so anyone else whose been there, I'm all ears. Failing this, is there a header place around Melbourne who does custom headers? I'm thinking this more of a long term thing because I know steel headers don't last forever.
Any ideas?

Re: Headers for black 202
I set mine up intially with the two piece headers off a carby 202 black motor.
You can just see them in the pic.

There are a few places who do custom pipes, but who you need to find is Barney. I think he does the occasional work out of an exhaust shop in Cranbourne. He was also at Hallam too (can't think of he name just this minute). I'll ask around and see if he's still working. He once spent 6 + hours making custom pipes for my brothers xp with a 250 2v head. Awesome work at an extremely reasonable price.
Thanks Craig and DR. The problem I've got isn't major, and the arm touches right before full lock. Short term I plan to knock a small dent in that spot, so there is no contact. It never occurred that the two piece headers would work with the runners (I tried a set of 12 port headers to suit carby and the primaries foul the intake runners). I guess this one can wait, in the meantime, I think I'll hunt around for someone to make me a set, (this Barney guy sounds good). When you say reasonable price, DR, what is normal price for custom made extractors?
Re: Headers for black 202
Ive got an injected 202 in an FC and the extractors where they become 2 pipes are vertical rather than horizontal ,Id imagine your pipes are side by side by the sounds of it but I cant offer any more help ,theres no brand or numbers on them.

Thanks Harko. At least I know a I have some options regarding the headers. I spoke to a local mob who do custom headers, and he quoted $750. That's leave the car there on Monday and collect Friday, so I assume that even includes fitting. You mention where yours go into two pipes, I assume yours must go 3-2-1, where mine go (6-2)-3-1. (tri-y) with the last three in a triangle.

um im not sure bluehaze ,they are off the car at the moment but stored deep in the roof of the shed.
give me untill the weekend and ill see if i can get close enough for a couple of pictures for you.
these are an off the shelf item ,contact chuck on this forum and he may be of some help as he bought them many moons ago.

Re:
Nothing as yet. I've shelved this project engine for a bit as I'm putting my FB back to stock except for a few minor tweeks to the grey. The set up I've got on the 186 is a little different as it's running straight LPG using a Gasresearch carby and normal points ignition. I have to say both are dismal failures as the carby is difficult to get good mixture control throughout the engine range and the dissy is as what you would expect for its design. Most of the problems I discovered trying to solve a massive flat spot but only after I fitted a fuel ratio meter and oxygen sensor. Once over the flat spot the car went like stink, ran nice and smooth, but it chewed the gas. Once I get back to it I'll be ditching the distributor and going direct fire ignition using cam and crank sensors, and the fuel system will go closed loop control vapour injection. So far I'm looking at getting a Megasquirt ECU as it seems fairly adaptable plus I like the learning function that fine tunes the maps. Price is good too!!Bluehaze wrote:Hey Craig, what sort of ECU are you running there? I've only been on the whole EFI trip for about a year now, would be great to compare notes re fuel maps, ignition tables and general setups.
It's funny you should ask about my setup, I've been reading about your's with interest as well:egeek:

Hey Craig .......Have you sussed out the new Liquid Injected Gas ...........I have been looking at it for my F**d XR 50 Ute .....
They say almost the same comsumption as petrol and more power ..............Fingers
Cheers

Yes mate, but it means a lot more expense as you need a different gas tank arrangement (internal high pressure fuel pump) and injectors. I was opting for either a stepper motor type fuel control for the vapour line to the carby or going vapour injectors as they're a lot cheaper from what I have seen.
Hi Craig.
The Megasquirt journey for me has been an absolute brain melting learning experience. Also using the wideband oxy sensor with a gauge has really opened up the whole tuning process. Its got me thinking about the relationships between AFR, advance, acceleration enrichment, PCP, and heaps of other stuff. You've probably already looked at the Megasquirt forum on line, if so you'd know the guys there are very helpful. (yes, I'm also blue haze on that forum). I bought the blank PCB with the components separately, and built it up myself. They say you need moderate to good soldering skills- that's the truth! I work with electronics, and have been wielding a soldering iron for over 20 years, and my advice there is get a good iron and practice if you think your skills need some work. If you decide to go with the MS system, let me know.
