EK KINGPINS

Post by Bulldog.1954 »

Hi guys, just hoping someone can shed some light on this confusing issue ? Have had trouble with camber and general steering issues, was told the wrong kingpins,EH,were wrongly sent out and installed, so new EK ones were sent out, then tould thet are the same ? And now apparently they say the trick with these is they have to be sent away somewhere to be bent to be right for this application ? just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this ? cheers 0413 569 947, melbourne

Hi Bulldog,
is it camber or caster that you're having a problem with?? Is it a standard front end for FB/EK???
I'm pretty sure that the king pin support is the same for all FB thru to EH, but the stub on the king pin assy (knuckle) is different after EK due to different brake arrangements for EJ to HD (drum duo servo). I dont even think you can bolt an FB/EK brake backing plate to an EJ or later stub. I dont have all my books on me at the moment as I'm away. Someone else may be able to help with this. Its a bit confusing now that I read that bit, but my point is if they were EJ onward king pins you wouldn't be able to run standard brakes from FB or EK.
The parts book states:
FB EK EJ EH HD King pin suspension support as being the same (thats the long inner part of the king pin assy)
FB & EK only King Pin Knuckle as the same (thats the stub axle part of the king pin assy)

Also, what was your steering problems???
I have in the past found king pins put on arse about i.e. left and right side wrong. As there is a fair amount of inbuilt caster angle in the king pin support, you'll find that if they are on the wrong side you'll get too much caster in one direction and you won't be able to adjust it out. Maybe this is what they are talking about??
If you have a look in a factory workshop manual for FB or EK there is a great diagram in the steering geometery section that depicts all the required angles and it shows the "laid" back vertical angle of the king pin.
Cheers
