Frogmouth Airfilters for Holden Stromberg

Post by Stygian »

I've received a few PMs in recent months about the "frogmouth" airfilter units fitted to the Holden Stromberg carburettor. Although listed under the "Parts and Suppliers" thread, I thought I would start one here to make it a bit easier to find.

The frogmouths were manufactured by Alan Fountain, whom can be contacted on (02) 4392 2215. Take note that these are made for the Stromberg 97 carb and that a spacer is needed to fit them to the Holden Stromberg. These spacers are made by Alan's son; and they may need a little grinding to fit (which was my experience).

I found that there was some slight porosity on each frogmouth I purchased, but these are minor blemishes. As you can see, they do look the business.

The frogmouths come with the mesh but not the disposable filters. These are available from:

Looks like triples are almost compulsory for 2012

And contrary to popular belief the fitting of triples won't turn your grey into a hand grenade

Here's mine prior to painting the insides black and fitting on the roadster. But I had moved the screens to sit flush on top of the carb opening. No faults in the castings and I believe they originate from the same place. Can't remember what I paid for them but got them from the Flathead Garage here in Vic.

And fitted...

G'day Devilrod,

Just away from the frogmouth subject for a quick question, is that a low pressure fuel pressure gauge on the firewall? I'm going to run twins on my 39 Merc flathead and as you know the 97's & 94's don't like fuel pressure over 3 to 4lbs, all the fuel pressure gauges I've seen are graduated to high and 3 to 4lbs would hardly register.

Frogmouths look cool

Nope! But it only goes up to 15lbs. I keep the pressure around 2.5lbs by the gauge. Johns rod and custom have them in a three different styles from memory.

Continuing the O/T journey are you going 94's or 97's? I'm running 94's with the jets sized down to 42 with 3.5 power valves on a stock 39 merc with a modified dizzy (12v single points). Seeing as Holley still make power valves all you need to do is a little grinding to get the new power valves to seat properly in the old carbs. Surprisingly it makes a big difference in the go but bugger all in fuel economy!

Stromberg 97's, on a mild 239 Merc, truck clutch and I've got Edelbrock heads to go on as well. Points dissy but will probably go electronic, I converted my grey last year to electronic and ever since wondered why I waited so long to do it :? :? Haven't settled on a jet size yet, as far as fuel economy goes if I was overly worried I'd have put a SBC in and gone with LPG.

I just think its cool cruising along powered by a dinasour motor, Grey motor or Flatheads

Just make sure you have the truck sump to match the truck (11") clutch. Mine has the same but with a car sump and to get to the clutch bolts it looks like I'll have to drop the sump to do it. Not fun... I'm not worried about economy either just fouling plugs. Took a little bit of playing around to get right.

Sounds like a very nice setup though should post up some pics in the other cars off interest section.
