Vl commodore diff and suspension

Post by Darren »

Hi all. Iam doing a RB31 conversion on an EK ute. I have the entire diff, tail shaft and suspension from a donor VL wagon. Has any one done a VL to Ek rear conversion and if so could you share your experience. The VL is drum rear but this can be changed to disc whilst the axles are shortened. The front has a Castlmain Hot Rod's HQ drum to disc conversion so the front has HQ studs. I quess you can get blank rear disks for a VL and have them fitted for HQ studs. Feel free to comment.

What exactly is your question? is the diff the right width for what you require ?

As for the stud pattern thing , if you want to run HQ stud pattern you can offset drill the existing holes and use an oversize wheel stud available from Coventrys. Its pretty easy to grind all the brackets off and either take the original mounts off your old diff or press up a pair of new ones , before you remove your old diff use an angle indicator on the flange then mount your new diff in on the brackets , set the pinion angle where the original was, tack it up then remove and fully weld the mounts on.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Thanks for the reply. I believe the diff will need to be reduced in width which is a specialised job for a differential engineering firm. At this point it is possible to put in discs brakes which might as well be done at the time.

OK, my question was whether it is possible to take the rear suspension and diff from the VL and weld it into the EK, hence getting rid of the leaf suspension and gaining live axle coil.
