Brake booster firewall mounted on the FB Holden

Post by Squirralien »

Hi, I am after any information or links to do with a brake booster/master cylinder to be mounted on the firewall,
I have heard a possibility with a Gemini booster and commodore master cylinder or visa versa,,,
Id like it to be nice and neat,
but if all else fails I will have to go to the VH40 remote mounted booster

Its an FB Holden being converted to Auto with a red motor, HR front with disks and drum rear

Thanks in advance for any information,,,
Thanks
Steven

Gemini booster and XA/XB master works. Needs:
a) the correct booster (there are several different Gemini boosters).
b) the pushrod lengthened to preload correctly.
c) some firewall holes elongated,
d) brake lines run with some degree of finess to avoid hitting the FB/EK bonnet hinges.

Try here:

I am finally in the middle of the brake booster mod,
I have got a booster that does put the master at about 11 o clock 5 oclock when mounted to to simply fix this I will just weld some extra steel around the bracket where the booster bolts on to the bracket and Ill mark it for exact holes to drill to make it straight, then shape the steel to look like it was supposed to be there and either get it chromed or zink plated, I have elongated the holes in the master and it bolts up nicely to the booster, I have modified the pedal box and firewall to move it in the middle of where the clutch and brake were, in the peddle box I used an old pedal box and cut some bushes to weld in to place on the pedal box so the main shaft can move and be fixed to the pedals, ill put some pictures up, haven't got pictures of the booster yet but here are some of the firewall and the pedal box, Ill get some of the booster and put them up soon, maybe a before and after on the bracket,

Thanks for the comments Trev and MeFB oh and of coarse Harv who gave me the links to research a while ago

Here you can see that the bracket is now round and I have drilled holes in to accommodate the slight lean on the master cylinder so now it will sit straight,

Here you can see the Gemini Booster on with the VN master cylinder, it didn't take long to make the connecting rod but I didn't get a picture I just put it in, what a nasty job that was, so little room, well its done and the brake pedal starts to engage after about maybe 2 or 3mm of travel so should be nice,,, Oh yes and it squirts brake fluid as I found out haha, lucky its 2K paint, I got impatient and painted the bracket black,, oh well, I have a deadline June long weekend

I brought the booster and master cylinder from hoopers I think the master cylinder is XB have no idea what the booster would be native too.
Its a double diaphragm and the master is 1 inch bore, I'm using HQ disks and calipers up front and vn on the rear I'm trying to find a brake fitter to come and make me some lines in the next couple of weeks hopefully. The last time I spoke with an engineer he told me to get a licensed brake fitter to make the lines.

I go to a brake professional and give him the measurements that I have taken from where the lines need to run, I use some string or similar to run around the way they need to go and then get them made at the brake place, they will only do the length and put the ends on where I go and then I take them home and use a small pipe bender which I am about to buy from Sprint auto parts for about $20 and then bend them up to the shape they need to be and put them in, I guess they are still professionally made but not sure how fussy your engineer is on who installs them, its alot cheaper that way, I guess if I took the car there they would bend and install but then when you get it back and its different to what you wanted its to late, I like to do as much as I can myself and that way everything is how I want it, it will go to the brake place for a full safety check once its finished,,
Thanks
