Machining

Post by FBeing »

I snapped my rear axle on the way to work this morning (peak hour traffic in Sydney - it was awesome  )

Anyway I am pretty sure I need to get a new one made. I'm going to suss it out more tomorrow and measure it all up.
I'm pretty sure I've got a standard diff and the housing etc has been cut and shut to fit wider wheels

So... Does anyone know of somewhere to get one made up
I know this ain't going to be cheap so I'm looking at a cheaper option
Of course a good job is needed too

I'm in the eastern suburbs of Syndey too so something relatively close would be good

Cheers

I had a couple of diffs done at Diff Technics in Kogarah. This was over 10 years back, so I'm not sure if they still operate . Not cheap, but good work.

are you sure the diff has been narrowed sounds like alot of trouble/expense considering it has steel wheels and they could just move the centres
IF the diff is narrow could it be an LC/LJ torana diff ? other options narrowed diff cut and resplined axles or possably they may have cut them and welded them  which may explain a stock grey motor being i assume driven sensibilly snapping an axle

anyway you don't want an axle made from scratch, if it's narrowed you'll want somebody to cut and respline an axle for you, i have an axle but can't get it for a couple of weeks as it's in the 2 door
sometimes yor just better off shitting in yor hands and clapping

Thanks for the advice guys
And thanks Mick and Matt for the offers, really appreciate it

Flat out at the mo but Matt I reckon you might be getting a PM in the next few days

And yep it's a stock as rock grey. 2nd snapped axle in as many years (both sides) I don't drive it hard at all (not that it goes hard anyway!)

Mildly frustrating to say the least. Not to mention 5 different people abusing me as they drove past yesterday morning whilst I was motioning people up further to get into the other lane whilst waiting for the towie for an hour. In the rain

That doesn't sound right to me. Grey motors shouldn't be breaking axles at all. I'd check the whole thing out Stu.

If the axles have been shortened, you don't know what sh1t job whoever did them may have done

Well yep whoever did the work did a crap job and strange stuff.
The actual axle shaft is 640mm. Is that short? It's broken up at the brake end. You can see machine grooves up there
I thought it should be all one piece and heat treated?? Im not real up to speed on these
Also theres a bit at the brake end which is shorter.
I'll post pics up to explain it when I get the time.
Options? Custom billet axles?? Whole new rear end?? Burn the car???
I'm just about to pick up my custom rims which I had made to suit prior all this
What a pain in the arse (and pocket)

Oh and just to be clear, I bought this car off Steve Jackson but someone else had done the work well before he even purchased it.
So Steve's not to blame

OK here are some pics:

Whole shot so you can see what I am actually measuring...
Image

Total length = 640mm
Image

Brake end: which I think may be shortened too? Is 40mm standard here??
Image

So what the hell has been done to this axle????
I am quite unsure as to what to do, I need to act fast as I want to get it back on the road, and it's taking up space at someone else's place. I don't want a bandaid fix, am thinking spend the time and money and do it right this time so no more grief.
Suppose just get a torana one? Which will no doubt have to be modified for my new rims - oh and a new tail shaft too I guess.

Anyway any ideas, options and opinions welcomed

Just get yourself a complete HR (LJ Torana, EH, Volvo) rear end and stick that in, Trev 8) .

hard to tell buy the pic i it kinda looks like grind marks where it is broken so i'de guess what i thought was correct and they've been welded
1. what did you do for the other side as you said you broke the other axle ?
2. if you've just had wheels made to suit the width diff you have in the car not much point getting another diff that is more than likely not going to be the same

my sujestion would be find somebody that can cut and respline the axles when talking high HP cars this isn't the best option but they should be more than fine in this aplication
i'll see if i can get some No's for people to ring

Thanks for the input guys
Now I'm still undecided
If I put a new rear end in it still has to be shortened plus get a new tailshaft
It might be dear to respline axles? I gather that can be done even though have been hardened?

I'll do some more investigating
Those numbers would be appreciated Mick

Stu sorry mate no photo's my Iphone has recently gone for a swim

But Itook some measurements and a stock axel is 700mm long and brake end is 45mm.The hub bit behind the brake end seems to be different on all my stock axels than in your photo.

If you still need to grab it give me a call 0409713510.

Thanks Matto

I'll give you a buzz in a coupla days, caught up with work at the mo and have someone looking at options

Now I'm confused. Not sure what axle I'm running.
If anyone knows from the above flange dimensions what I'm running please let me know.

Oh and iPhones and water don't mix eh? Been there before myself
