Air sucking noise and no power?
Air sucking noise and no power?
Had a little problem today...
I mentioned this in another thread as a side note but thought i had better bring it into the proper section-
When i put my foot down there was a very loud "air suction" noise and a very noticeable lack of acceleration. Had a look and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary, tightened up all lines to the carby and manifold bolts, got back in and it drove ok but the problem continued off and on for the rest of the ride home.
I know this is a bit vague and doesn't give much of a hint as to what might be the problem but thats all i've got so far..
Thanks in advance,
Ryan

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Thanks Trev but don't have one.
Would large amounts of black crust inside the carby be an indication of anything?

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
That it needs a good clean out and possibly sucking more air than fuel....As a start get some carby cleaner and give the carby a good clean out.

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Thanks DR, will do. Maybe a better air filter too, the supercheap special has probably done its time
Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Utek,
Air suction sounds like vacuum leaks. Try leaving the motor running at idle (watchout for the fan!) and spray some WD40 around the carb, inlet manifold and any vacuum lines you have. If the revs come up, you've found the leak.
Loose exhaust can also make 'orrible air suction sounds (though usually don't drop too much acceleration) - try the manifold nuts, including the ones where the 'zorst heads down off the manifold.

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Thanks Harv, i think i've found the problem and you're on the money. The manifold gasket is totally rooted and two of the bolts/big washer thingys are simply not there, although it has been this way for a while but i guess its just been hanging on and has finally had enough
Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Yep that will do it!

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Hit Autobarn, Supercrap, Repco and Bursons today- no one had the manifold gasket in stock. So Bursons are getting me one in tomorrow, (there was only two at their stock shop and they ordered both so if anyone wants one let me know and i'll grab it for ya.)
Any ideas as to where to get the big washer things for the manifold bolts? As far as i can see Rares dont do them so i'm thinking wreckers, is there any other models that will fit?

I have some red motor ones here, you going to Lardner park this weekend? I can bring some for you.

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Ryan if you're chasing parts and can get to Repco in Doveton if they have whatever you're after they get it in 5 mins instead of waiting for it to get dropped off on a run (next day). The Vic distributing Warehouse is out back!

Re: Air sucking noise and no power?
Yeah, try to get into the habit of checking the tension on the manifold nuts when you service the car. Without periodic retightening they will become sufficiently loose to cause vacuum leaks. It's an easy thing to overlook. The downdraught Strombergs used on Holden sixes looooooove a very strong vacuum signal and will protest if they don't get it.UTEK wrote:Thanks Harv, i think i've found the problem and you're on the money.
