Turquoise FB in RSA

Post by Alastair Saxton »

Hi Guys.
Some of you might have seen this one of ours in various places on the forum, but I thought I would start a thread for her. First a bit of history. In the mid 70's Moms brother moved to a small inland town called Bedford. He spotted this car and when we went up to visit we went to look at the car. Old Sergent Smith had bought the car new when he retired, and it had been with them since. He did however say that if he decided to sell it he would call us first. In 1980 he gave us a call and told Dad that, "you boys had better come and fetch your car" I was ten at the time. He asked for the princely sum of R800 and we became the owners. She had about 25000 miles on her at the time.
She saw regular, but pampered service since. Although we are not too scared to take her on a gravel road.
Now she has 75 000 miles.

Dad died in Nov 2009 and now the FB needs to be re registered into my name. That means passing a roadworthy test. So I have had her up on stands for a few weeks and done some jobs.
I had to fabricate and fit a new channel under the radiator. Then the brakes needed attention. I had had the wheel cylinder re sleeved in Stainless years ago , but found that the aluminium pistons often wanted to seize up,especially if not used for a few weeks. So I got bronze pistons machined, new seals, newly relined shoes and a better handbrake cable. Assembeled last night and ready to bleed tonight.
I found the pitman arm was a bit loose. The nut was tight, but I found that the big spring washer was a fraction too small and therefore holding on a step on the shaft below the splines. So a new bigger washer went on and the pitman arm tightened up firmly.
Although not a roadworthy requirement I wanted to fit seat belts. I had done a similar exercise on my red FB (although that one is still in pieces) and duplicated all the parts needed to do this FB. So I kind of had a kit in a box. I will attach the story of the seat belts from when I did the red car. I will get to finally fiting up the belts a little later on but for now at least the mountings are there.

I also fashioned these surrounds for the corners of the parcel ledge where the belt comes through from the reel below.

That's if for now. I need to take her for the test in about a weeks time. Hopefully all goes well and they dont give me too many hassels.

Alastair, Just a thought (a silly one)
If you didn't happen to get it roadworthy on time, draw a picture of it in showroom condition and hold that in front of the inspector's face. He'll probably think there's really an FB in front of him

Hi Guys. Still working on the old girl. The more you work the more you find and so the list of things gets longer. So this is what I have done so far.
Image
Early on I found the pitman arm was loose so rectified that by putting the correct washer onto it and tightening the big nut. Then I filled up the steering box with a bit of oil only to find a puddle under the car in the morning. Now the Pitman arm was on so tight that I could not get it off. So after looking at the manual I made a puller out of the scrap steel pile. And it even worked. Easy enough project and a bit of arm exersize cutting a 5 mm slice off a piece of 50 mm round bar with the hacksaw. Nerw seals were luckely easy enough to find, no more leaking.

Image
Tim here is the pic you asked for. I presume Steve would also be interested. The car is a RSA assembeled car, here is the ID tag which is simply screwed on below the left front door hindge. No Numbers are stamped onto the car. Unfortunately there is not much information on the tag as to colour of body or trim. I have one or two other tags from scrap cars that I have labeled on the back with where it came from and the colour that the car was.
Image
I still need to do a few odds and ends, although on a 50 year old car it is a continious process.

No there's nothing stamped into the body at all. Seems most of the GM cars of that era are the same. The plate isn't even rivited with a special 'tamper proof' rivit. So it is actually as easy as getting out a screw driver and swopping a plate if you were to re-shell a car. I have on one or two ocassions found a similar thickness piece of aluminium, with the body number stamped into it, glued with a bit of seam sealer in odd places like -up inside a door or under the carpet. But I don't know any details about that practice at all.
During a period of sanctions against South Africa, GM pulled out of RSA although by name only, they still really traded but under the name Delta. I believe that at that stage all the GM archives were dumped. So 26 tons of history went to the tips. So some of the answers to some questions will be found.

Took me a bit longer to get it through the test but it passed. They did mention a few items that need attention. One of those was the handbrake. It was working perfectly on the way there. I think they presumed you had to turn the handle clockwise to release it and forced it unhtill the sliding handle climbed out of it's carrier. So it came home with the lever dangling down. But it passes so I was happy.

Hey Alastair, no sorry I don't. I just enjoy reading South African literature. Congrats on passing the roadworthy test.
