149 Red Tips and Tricks

Post by dmulally »

Hi All,

After umming and ahhing about what to do I have taken Ratboxes advice and found myself a 149 red engine to put into my ute. It is a tow car and the grey simply cant cut it any more and the mods needed to get it up to speed to tow are just too pricey for my modest budget. I will paint it grey as side by side, they dont look that much different to my eye. I can leave the original front end in place which is in great condition so with the grey motor to one side, I can always convert it back some day if need be and grind off the mounts I will be putting in.

I have got a 149 that has never been rebuilt and have had it stripped then acid dipped and crack tested. I have gone for brand new over sized pistons that bring it up to a 157 iirc.

While I am still buying parts, is there anything I should be aiming for? I am looking for torque naturally in regards to towing. The steel timing gear goes without saying :-)

Thanks in advance,

Damo

for towing prolly just a small cam (usually refered to as carravan cam  ) good for low end torque, if you have some extra cash a bit of port work it should if you bought it complete have a high comp head already, a 2 barrel webber off an XD f o r d and a set of extractors

I didnt know the 149 has a higher comp head. I guess I would be wasting my time farting about with yella terra heads then.

If only I knew how to put on a number plate correctly though!!! :) :)

there's easy to follow instructions
if you look on the head to the rear and on the manifold side there should be a H or an L cast on it H for high L for low comp
