thanks Neil...maybe I can cross the border on compassionate grounds - are the guards really bad?

I've got 6 mate mate, out of the 6 I only have 2 for one side (can't remember which side ) a couple of them are not great and one is painted so don't know whats under it yet, will know more when I get them blasted.

I spent the day tinkering on the Sprinter so nothing new on the EK - but I took a couple more photos of the guards


As usual, I didn't take enough 'before' and 'during' photos ... so I zoomed in on one of the original car photos and I took some more 'afters' - (though they'll probably become 'durings' if I revisit the guards later)

Looks like a great job you’ve done on those guards Patrick. I’m still trying to get mine looking straight after rust repairs, with the crease line along the top being particularly challenging, back toward the window.

thanks Clay ... I reckon that when the light hits my guards in different directions I'll find things that could be better..I think of this as being the 'solid and protected from the weather' phase.

I spent a few hours under the car (mainly the drivers side where welding is completed) and in the sub-floor area with a wire brush and bitumen paint

...there's some wasted space down there...has anyone put in an access hatch?

I put my battery behind passenger under there - need to be able to remove the boards to replace but can charge from under hood no issue

Thought about it. Moving the battery is a good idea. They are pretty we’ll maintained each free these days, and it improves the handling of the car and battery life. I probably won’t put in a hatch, just make the entire panel easily removable using dzus fastners or similar.

Hey Patrick,

You doing some good work to that ute mate, keep chipping away. I put an access hatch in my floor behind the passenger side. It has a lock and a door switch that operates LED lighting too. See this link http://www.fbekholden.com/forum/viewtop ... 8&start=15

thanks Stephen, yeah, chipping away is how I see it - I always like this stage of a project because there's a lot of different things to do - so I can chop and change depending on what I feel like. Patrick

Hi Patrick I did similar to what the other guys have said put battery behind passenger side but I made my panel go right across so I can remove if needed also able to store some tools and maybe jack on drivers side, I think you can see the panel in the pic below.
First pic was when I was making it and second is fitted. Neil

mine has a lift up full width front half similar to Neils but longer, back to the front of the wheel arch . I carry cleaning gear, a toolbag and some spare parts in there , and on the way home from the nationals it is also usually full of wine
