But still, Welding a "Guard" onto the body is NOT fixing it properly. so Allison and I with the help of Mick (Allison's brother, who happens to be extremely good with a MIG, but unfortunately owns a Silly blue oval.) and with the Help of the community are TRYING to restore this vehicle. Allison has decided that when it's done it is to be as close to when it came off the production line as it can be. and it annoys me when I find that previous owners Welded the guard on instead of picking up a dropped bolt with a magnet on a stick. (Thanks Devlirod, we got the Socket out, and found the bolt that was dropped by the previous owner which resulted in him welding the guard on)

Small list of annoying crap the previous owner has done:

• WELDED a guard on, instead of finding a single dropped bolt.
• Replaced the Original steering wheel with one that has ruined the horn contact ring.
• SPRAY PAINTED the original door trims in black.
• Replaced the seat with one from an EK Sedan.
• Put an EK Special chrome dashboard in it. - Speaking of which, we have 3 Speedometers, with 3 different odometers, and have no idea which is the correct one.
• Using BLU TACK to cover holes he has drilled into the dashboard.
• Using Blu Tack to attach an EK Special dash trims.
• Replaced the Original hubcaps with EK Hubcaps.
• Put in an FC Indicator stalk.
• Put in an FC ENGINE!
• Mongreled an EK Squirter assembly into the hood.
• Drilled a hole in the dashboard to put in a squirter button for the electric K-Mart job squirter bottle/motor.
• Painted over the original paint.
• Painted THICKLY over existing surface rust without removing the rust first.
• Attached a canopy that has caused the sides of the tray AND THE ROOF to rust.
• Drilled holes into the tray to attach bars that are used to hold the canopy on.
• Painted over rust on the tailgate. (Rust has started appearing through the K-Mart Strokes brand spray paint "primer" that he used)
• Left major engine components open to air, causing them to rust. such as BOTH spare crankshafts.
• Left the Generator in a crate full of water.
• Broken the Carburettor housing.
• Drilled holes and Riveted on a Bicycle drink bottle holder, for use in holding the Lead Replacement bottle (I can understand that one though) - Saves me buying a drink bottle holder for my 2002 Apollo Summit MTB though
• Replaced the knobs on the dash.
• Used about 10 washers to space out the choke cable.... :-S
• And in the Previous owners own words "Removed the engine to replace a timing gear" - which doesn't explain why he cut every single wire and hose to remove the engine. more specifically CUTTING wires only 2 CM From each side of the headlight Terminal blocks for example.

Just sounds like a typical farm car used exactly as such working for its keep(as Smooth said). Fixed with whatever was available at the time. Then left to the elements when finished with. Don't forget it was a project car you bought not a runner which I still think you've been extremely lucky with. Believe me it could be alot worse. After playing with various makes and models for the last 20+ years I've seen worse.... You should try and pull apart a complete car thats been on the road forever, had numerous owners repair things in their own special way. Or buy a 99.9% complete project car that just needs assembly My old man had to keep getting bits... Can't belive how much is needed as far as 0.1% goes to finish a car.

I know it was once a farm car, the owner previous to the owner before us. The previous owner was a Mid 20's city guy, that was "apparently" restoring it -or so he says-
He said he bought it from his uncle in working condition.

Judging by the custom speakers that were put in on a piece of flimsy board that split, the Green P Plate that was on the rear window, and the crappy spray paint used, amongst the other list, most of which (Such as painting over the body rust) all seem to have been done by him, in his back yard.

I know it can be worse, but still, the previous owner mongreld it, clearly knew nothing, and, judging by searching around on the net, didn't even go as far as Allison and I as to ASK people in the know How to do stuff, asking people such as you Devilrod, has been very helpful. and I thank you, and harry, Mick jagger, Thommo, shmeagain, samprinci, SheilaShoe, igor, Harko, and everyone else that has helped us so far. (Too many names to mention)

Unless they are true car enthusiasts most will as you say mongrel it. Hence why you now have the ute. Got in over their head and offloaded it!

unfortunately we might stick with the FC engine for now, as it was apparently rebuilt 7 years ago, did only about 2000 miles, then needed a timing gear and was removed, had a basic inspection of the engine done, and what's there looks as good of starting place for an engine as any.

but Allison has been doing what she does best, and has found a lot of correct bits and pieces to replace the incorrect ones like the previous guy put in, such as a proper FB painted dash, instead of the EK Special Chrome one.

either way, will slowly come into place.

You're not Robinson Crusoe in buying an FB/EK that has suffered at the hands of an unsympathetic owner. However, you made a good choice in buying a car that was mostly complete. Take your time to do things properly, chase up the little bits and pieces and work on it when you can. It might take a while but you'll get there eventually.
...and yeah, replace those godawful FB vacuum wipers with a decent electrical unit from the superior EK model...

Don't worry, it's already got an electric wiper motor in it, Allison's mother owned an FJ, and also a friend once owned an FB When they were knew, BOTH have complained about the uselessness of the Vacuum wipers. Start accelerating and the wipers stop.... then when you ease off... they go nuts.

The idea we are going for, at least with the wipers, is make them LOOK like the vacuum system, but make them Electric.

Have to agree, looks like you are both going at the resto as a well oiled team but there will be times when you'll get sick of looking/working on it (It happens).
So my advice is DON"T force yourself to work on it otherwise it will become an unwanted burden you'll get frustrated at times with lack of parts, being sent wrong parts or buying supposedly good repro parts that don't fit
If you get to this point of frustration then take my advice, throw a sheet over the whole thing and walk away. Don't go near it but whatever you do DON"T sell it, eventually your enthusiasm will return. How many times have you seen the ads for part built cars, you know the ones that read

Äll the hard work done" or "90% finished" or my favourite "Wife says sell"

You and Allison are on the right track and I look forward to seeing it finished, so build it as you can afford it and don't put yourself under a self imposed timetable.
