When you say end play what do you mean ?
I know most gearbox rear shafts move around and are supported by the tail shaft yolk bearing, I'm not familiar with the crash box but I assume the bush can be replaced in the extension housing ?
Also I had a grumble once and it turned out the uni was stuffed, I was pretty sure it was the gearbox.
Radiator is nice .

Hi Greg - yeah a bit of up and down that can get taken up by the bush in the extension but the end play I'm referring to is in and out of the box. Patrick

found another noisy bit from the ute gearbox (gbox a) - counter gear shaft is a bit rough

still have to pull apart the other gearbox (gbox b) - but I can already see why it was decommissioned

If the rear main bearing's outer race has spun in the gearbox case, it may be "challenging" to find the ends of the bearing retaining clip, because it will have spun along with the outer race.

Hi Rob - yeah, luckily just the rear cage of the double bearing gave way ... but as I disassembled the gearbox and pushed the shaft forward the other lot fell out so I had the outer race tight in the box and the inner race tight on the main shaft.
taking the outer race out went as per normal (with the original style snap ring with the tag on it)
... for the inner race I had to hold the gears in place with rags and wooden wedges so I could tap the shaft through

I emptied out gbox b today - there's enough good bits between the two of them to put one together without buying a kit (that's how it would have gone with my first couple of cars forty something years ago) - but I've ordered the double row bearing kit for this one
it took a fair bit of flushing to get rid of all the glitter - and then I went through with a magnet - took half a dozen passes until it came out clean
the front race of the bearing was still holding the shaft in place and the glitter appears to have been contained in the speedo drive area (though I'm sure it travelled a bit with the oil) - speedo drive lost a tooth - everything else checks out good ... I'd say it wasn't driven after it squealed

some rough tools
I thought that while I'm waiting for the gearbox kit to turn up, I may as well get some bits ready. I started by pressing the bearing off the clutch gear (it wasn't coming off with light tapping). I'll probably be using the press and a bit of pipe to press the new one on as well.

that got me thinking about the main shaft rear bearing - which I'd prefer to press in rather than tap in (I didn't mind tapping the old one out because it was going in the bin anyway) - so I got a couple of bits together ready for that

when I was pulling the bearings out of the cases, I changed the profile of my snap ring wedge a few times from the one I'd seen pictures of, until I was reasonably happy with it (by pushing the tool in from underneath I could see where it was making contact - I also chamfered the edges)

a few more bits to pull the main shaft through

and some bits of 16mm chrome curtain rod (painted ones leave paint behind) to load the counter gear rollers and hold the rear thrust washer ... my plan is to leave the rod in place and push it through with the new counter gear shaft

I should have finished the outside jobs before this rain set in. I wanted to put in an order so went out to remove the clutch and check it out - at least you don't get rained on once you are under the ute
supposedly you can let them go to 0.3mm (12 thou) off the rivets but at 0.64mm I can't see the point in putting this back in and have ordered a new kit ... I'll stick with 200mm

the gearbox rebuild kit turned up today, just before bourbon o'clock, so I only had time to press the rear bearing in
