We had one of the labourers at work just recently cut of his nose with a 5'' grinder and sanding disc. Lots of blood,etc .He is now back at work with a re- attached nose and scared face. Looks even uglier now. Hey fellas got me an issue dismantling the front end, the pipes on the master cylinders are rusted stuck, drowned them in WD40, tried undoing them drowned them in more WD40 leave it for a few more days drown them again been at this one job for nearly a fortnight what's the trick to getting these blasted things off?

Allison you need to buy flare nut spanners. All you will do if you try to use normal spanners is round them off.
Also when you do get the right spanner dont try and wind it off. Set the spanner on the nut and crack it off by wacking it with you fist or something if you get what i mean.
If you have already rounded them off you will have to use vice grips and thats the end of your brake lines. Probably a good idea to replace them anyway.

I'll vote for the vice grip method hold the top nut with a spanner and use vice grips on the brake line nut. By the time you put it back together you'll end up replacing the brake lines i'll bet, If thats the case you could just cut them off now and undo the line in the vice if the master cylinder is any good.

Yeah going to replace the pipes anyway just wanted to get the blasted things off so I could move onto the next job, which I guess that job is now finding a pair of vice grips that aren't broken

If you're going to buy flare nut spanners, invest the cash and buy a set of Sidchrome ones (or similar quality). The el-cheapo $16 variety from SuperCheap are cast, not forged. When you use the "whacking method" they crack the arms off the spanner. You then have to resort to the vicegrips at 2am, stuff the flare nuts and have to remake the pipe. Costs more than the Sidchrome set.

Don't ask me how I learnt that one .

Hey one more thing if you are getting your brake lines re-made but not straight away make sure you put the old ones some where safe, so later on you can use them as templates

Alison just buy the right tool and do it properly. The supercheap auto ones will do.
You need the spanners to do them up anyway.
I hate seeing peolle bodge things up.

Every time I've tried to use the cheap flare nut spanners I got from super cheap they have stretched and slipped on the nut. they are useless.
Keep your lines some where so they don't get bent and deformed on the weekend I dragged my old lines out they were that deformed at first I thought the pipe that went to the front left went to the rear.

ordered in a nice set of flare nut spanners after waiting a week or two for them I got them yesterday $50 kinchrome set of 4 not overly expensive I was as happy as a pig in mud.

first thing I did when I got home was beeline straight for the shed, Daniel parked car was getting out looked in my direction and I was gone

all that stuff I sprayed it with clearly did the job cause once I got the spanner on it they came undone with only a little resistance, however there's where the good stuff ends onto the bad stuff.

brakelines are stuck under the steering that looks to be the next thing that will have to come out, after getting frustrated trying to get the brakelines out, decided to take the towbar off having banged leg into it numerous times moving around the ute, bolts rusted stuck and sockets wouldn't fit probably another wintworth ended up hammering a 14mm onto it and using a breaker bar got the bolt to move but the nut inside the panel let go so the bolt won't undo, as it did so my weight which I was pushing on the breaker bar caused me to fall forwards onto my knees got nice big bruises and swelling this morning after all that called Rosko to let him know when he does the welding he'll need to cut into the panel to undo the bolt he says just cut it off looks like we won't be bolting the towbar back on again.

highlights: more rust holes poking around under the dash found a piece of floor peeling up near the brake pedal turned out it was another piece of fibreglass hiding rust, the floor pans might need to be replaced after all, also found a split pin holding the pedal on could easily have fallen off the previous owner could have lost the brakes and lastly am I doing this right Daniel had the idea of removing the pedals removed the pins pull the peddle sideways while taking the pin out, the pin is stuck against a bracket under the dash Daniel wants the steering on it so we can move it around but I think it's time the sucker gets taken out what's the step by step it's not in the manual, we also removed the Windows from the doors too fix the runner and the drivers window should wind down now.

Lack of finances from job loss, progress has been slow, however I'm happy to report having gained new employment this week all three of my projects are plodding along.
