On the club run Sunday I noticed tyre scrubbing on the front. On some of the undulating roads and when taking left corners there was some scrubbing.

I am thinking I need to replace the front coil springs?? I fitted new front shocked 12 months ago. I checked the measurement as per the manual and they seem within tolerance.
Could it be the springs have lost their strength? Of the springs on eBay there are lowered, standard height and standard plus 20mm. I did see the manual had two different springs originally.



I don’t really want to swap front tyres/rims as I like the look/stance. Would appreciate any thoughts??

205s on the front are on the limit for clearance. Any chance a bit of judicious guard rolling would alleviate the issue? Our rears were getting the occasional rub on the run but I reckon if I take out the 3mm spacers it will fix it. Two weeks away with mother coming up so the rear springs will no doubt get taxed.

Springs wont alleviate tyre rub mate, as Clay mentioned 205's are tight for the front. Do you know WHERE it is rubbing ? Guessing it will be on the lip of the guard - depending on the severity you may be able to increase camber and get rid of the problem - is it rubbing while going straight ahead or when turning ?

I have two pairs of 195/75R 14” you are welcome to try out. One pair is on 7x14”steel rims with p7 offset, which calculates to around 108mm backspace.the other pair are on 6x14” with with p11 offset, or around 99mm b/s. They have minimal wear, and I would swap a pair for two of your 205/60 14”.

Thanks for your input. I don’t know much about suspension that’s why I’m on this forum. The scrubbing occurred when going straight ahead on some undulating country roads.

Looking at the drivers side front guard with a small thin mirror it is at the 12 o’clock position where it is rubbing (driver side). I was having another look tonight with a different mirror and on the passenger side the mirror pictured fitted between tyre & guard with extra clearance. However on drivers side mirror would only partly go in to position where tape is. So there is less tyre/guard clearance on drivers side?

I don’t think rolling the guards would help but happy to be convinced otherwise.

In ref to the springs I was thinking they might be old and have sagged, hence would not like the undulating road at 80 - 85 km/hr?

If shorter springs would lower the car wouldn’t the standard springs + 20mm give me a little more tyre/guard clearance?

Can you see a mark on the tyre where it has been rubbing ? The spring wont move the tyre in or out - just up and down. If it rubs with old springs it will still rub with new springs albeit maybe not as much. Clays offer is a good one - can check the offset of your rims against his and if it doesnt rub with the smaller tyre you are on a winner

This is why I run “staggered” rims. 6” p7 front with 195/70 14 on the ute, and 185/85 (I think) 13” on the sedan. Rear are p18 7” on a standard axle, which gives standard track. 225/60 14” tyres may rub on the inside with body roll. I run 235/60 13” on the sedan and they rub on the inside also with body roll. 235/60 14” on the ute rub a bit inside and out on bump.
