Hey Adam,
Sorry mate, just found your ute project, wondering if I can ask ya a few questions??? Just about to embark on the same mission...

How did u paint strip the ute?
How long was it after the strip that u etch primed it?
what did u paint the undercarriage with?
Did u treat the metal b 4 u etched?

Sorry if u have answered these questions b 4? Look forward to your responce.

Sam great to hear your about to start the same mission lol

Where abouts are you from hope your in melbourne would love to come see your project!!!!

In terms of my ute

I paint stripped the ute maunally ie, paint stripper in a bucket slapped on with a brush then scrapped off with a srapper. I chose this for a few reasons one to get the experience it was my first real project car, secondly due to cost it was alot cheaper to get a few mates around to help, and thirdly no fear of any damage to the panels compared to blasting. Once majority of the paint had been stripped down to metal it was then sanded with discs to bring it to a full bare metal look. The tray was the only section that was sand blasted as it was alot easier than doing by hand cost $150.00 so was worth it

It was cold in melbourne when it was stripped so once it was down to bare metal it was etch primmed immediately as simply leaving a piece of bare metal overnight resulted in surface rust. Once the etch primer was on it was then a task of selecting the panel to start on but atleast rust was not an issue

The undercarriage has not been painted yet, the inner sills and front end components have all been painted gearbox etc but the main undercarriage is still yet to get a coat of paint, 2 pac gloss black for the undercarriage, the gloss is easier than matt purely for the dirt and cleaning matt always has the dusted look.

In terms of treating the metal this was only done very late in the project wish the usual fish oil, we felt no need to treat the metal as etch primer was applied immediately.

I wish you the best of luck with your project, feel free to use mine as a reference as i know how hard it can be to work out where to start, whats needed etc. The forum is a great place to find out info, i posted some of the most stupidest questions at times especially early on that i look back now and just laugh but you need to make sure ur on the right track sometimes so use it as much as you can.

Take heaps of photos as you go start a post of your build as we on the forum love to see where others are at with theit projects. If you need anything ive PM'd my number

Good luck Sam

Adam

Well back from the honeymoon time to start getting the ute back up and running again. Went to Vicroads with the wife yesterday and she purchased my black and white plates for me very exciting indeed such a great wedding present. Also while there managed to chat to the lady serving us and got her to access the archives, didnt get to look but she gave me a nod when i asked about the original owner so atleast i now know im on track (gotta do a door knock for 112 houses lol)

Next week will be the big week wife goes back to work and ill be straight into it

Thanks guys and yeah it is just in time for some good weather, found it amazing that the old car smell has returned to the ute which is great as it disapeared when the interior was replaced.

Just so great to drive it as it has been sooo long
