Hi Rob,
I suppose they are more of a cutter than a drill really - yeah, got them from Sydney or Total most likely ... 10 double sided ones for about $40 - they seem to last pretty well

I'll see how I go with getting EK wheels before I let the others go. The one I painted was in good condition, I haven't had a good look at the other HR one yet... will keep you in mind.

Are they a better wheel?
What about widths? what is a standard EK wheel width (book says 4.5 in but then I see similar looking wheels advertised as 6 in)
Are HR rims wider? (hard to measure the rims with tyres on)

FE through to HR were all 4.5x13”. HD got wider brake drums, necessitating a change to the wheel centre profile, so you can’t fit the FE to EH rims on HD HR brakes. No problem fitting the later wheels to earlier cars, except that the ones with the holes have 1/4” wider rim offset. These were fitted to HR sedan and wagon.
All the later wheels will fit the disc brake front hubs available on HD HR. These are often retrofitted to the earlier cars.

thanks Stephen,
yeah, I thought I was finished until Spring; but, there's a couple of hours in the middle of the day that are okay for now...so good for the smaller jobs.
While I was banging around at the back, I found another 'non-original' bit

You found another standard rust spot for utes and vans Patrick. Ah, the memories. That was the only place on my ute that had bog and it still took me two plus years to fix the rust.

yeah, could do with a drain hole ... both sides were rusty and both inner and outer needed patches welded in - anyway, that's another couple of bits sealed up before winter

There was a drain hole in the design but may not have progressed on the factory floor. A lot of unskilled labour back then and drain holes often got spot welded shut.

what are the screws holding or are they just filling holes?
just a piece of stiff material to block off the hole
had a bit more of a look at the 'patch' today, the two screws were holding:
a strip of aluminium,
a piece of sandpaper, and
a folded envelope

That is nearly as curious as how the hole got there in the first place.

Thats gold - at least he took the time to make a gasket

- love finding those old bits of paper though - often tell a story all their own
You’ll find me lost somewhere!
