Gimme 5 years
Re: Gimme 5 years
so, does everyone make access to this 'storage area' waterproof or is having a tonneau cover the way to keep everything dry?
Re: Gimme 5 years
I thought of something I got done before I started this thread (apart from buying lots of bits).
There were some ugly holes in the dash beside the radio and the glovebox was a couple of bits of cardboard sticky taped together.
I had some fibreglass pieces from old ambulance cupboards, so I made up a fibreglass glovebox to the same dimensions as the old cardboard bits. I also bought some second hand dashboard trim pieces and a spray can of montana grey. The radio didn't have knobs but Jaycar had some okay ones.
first pic was taken at the time....second one I took just now (under the tarp) to show the insert

Re: Gimme 5 years
Nice Patrick I did the same and fitted the special trim to the dash, used a radio blank and cut the trim to take 2 gauges in between glovebox and dash as the holes were the right size but ugly and would have been hard to fill (for me) with the profile of that area under the trim.
Glovebox looks great when are you going into production

Re: Gimme 5 years
mine isn't weatherproof, just rely on the tarp to keep it dry.
I started with nothing and still have most of it left.

Re: Gimme 5 years
Yeah I thought about the weatherproofing a bit. In the end I've made sure the steel is well protected. Metalfix primed, 2k Epotec epoxy, acrylic primer and soon to be acrylic lacquer. Fully removable false floor for ease of inspection, cleaning and drying.

Do you ever watch shows like West Coast Customs and get ideas? but it's not quite the same when you go outside
Re: Gimme 5 years
If you have watched West Coast Customs you know you can fix that with a couple of old newspapers and a wheelbarrow full of bog .........

Good result mate - it’s just a box after all - the special trim is real noice - sets the whole dash off IMHO62ekute wrote:I thought of something I got done before I started this thread (apart from buying lots of bits).

Re: Gimme 5 years
The doors on the ute were pretty far gone
So I got some rust-free ones and cleaned them up a bit
I'll keep them out of the weather until I'm ready to put them on

Re: Gimme 5 years
I knew all my tyres were different but now I see I've got a couple of different styles of wheel as well
I put some paint on a couple of wheels ... noticed that I have 4 that have this profile
and 2 of this profile (different strengtheners around lug holes and hubcap sits out as far as the tyre)
Can anyone tell me what wheels each of these are off? and are there any other things I should look for when I go after a 5th wheel the same as pic 1 ?
thanks
Patrick

Photo 1: FE - EH. These are the period-correct ones for the ute.
Photo 2: HR.
Did (does) the ute have an HR front suspension and front disc brakes, perchance?
Things to look for with the early-series rims: Cracking between wheel-nut holes, usually evidenced by rusty stains. General rusting of the rim, most often around the valve stem hole. And also dings and bends in the rim. It's fairly easy to get the rim back into true with a b.f.h. and 12" adjustable.

Re: Gimme 5 years
The four are FE to EH factory rims and correct to the car. They will be date stamped inside the rim. If the centre’s are riveted to the rims on the inside then they are heavy duty items from a commercial vehicle such as your ute, and no doubt original to the car.
The other two, assuming the bot h have the small hole in one of the strengthening pressings, are from a HR passenger car, sedan or wagon. They will work on the ute and accept the hub caps, but they are offset 1/4” further out than originals. They are sought after by people due to the common myth that the hole means they are suited to HD HR disc hub fitment, whereas any of this style rim will fit the discs.

Re: Gimme 5 years
thanks Rob and Clay for the quick responses
Re: Gimme 5 years
A bit of a change - I had my phone (camera) with me - because I wasn't going to do any work on the ute.
...but, I was walking past and saw that the new piano hinge on the spare door wheel had rust stains...so I took that off to treat it and started tinkering
put a spot weld drill in the cordless
and a cutting disc in the angle grinder
and started to peel back some bad bits
got out the dremel for the bits that the angle grinder couldn't get to
and a grinding disc in the angle grinder to get back to some shiny stuff
drew up and cut a patch panel
bent it
...ready to weld in on a day when I'm planning to do stuff on the ute

Re: Gimme 5 years
Patrick,
What's the brand of spot weld drill (bit) you're using and where did you buy it? I bought one recently, and it was fantastic, until I broke the tip off . . . I got another from Sydney Tools, but I don't know how good it is yet.
And if you want to sell the HR rims, I'm happy to buy them.
