My EK van (grey motor EJ block-no other mods) is running pretty rough-any thoughts gents?
At 30-35 mph in top it is surging-almost a gentle kangarooing like I'm pumping the throttle on purpose, going up hills it tends to misfire/baulk and is idling very rough at the lights. At full pelt 65mph+ it's not as noticeable-but once I back of the throttle the surging starts up again.
I've had one opinion based on the sound eminating from the front of the block ( it's seem to be more raucous than it should) that it's the timing gear on the way out. Only owned it 9 mths don't know it's history as to how old the components are.
Carby has been rebuilt, fuel pump has been rekitted since I've owned it, and the mixtures/ idle adjusted.
Not blowing smoke but a fair amount of oil is blowing around the engine bay near the dip stick and and the very bottom of the block at the front.
Any help on what to try first would be greatly appreciated.
Diagnosis anyone?
So hard to diagnose things via a desciption without sticking your head under the bonnet
.
Could be a multitude of things causing it.
I guess start with the easy to check, cheap to replace things and go from there in a process of elimination.
Yep, check the condition and timing of your ignition circuit ie:- plugs, points, leads, condenser etc etc etc.
Stewart ( parisian62 ) had a similar problem ( kinda sorta ?? ) at Bendigo Nationals..... ended up being a flogged out timing gear keyway ( I think thats what is was??........ Stewart ?? ) so thats a possible especially since someone at your end has noticed some noises in that general area??.
Also make sure you are running a fuel filter either between the fuel pump and carby or, more preferable, one between the pump and tank as carby problems can also give some mid range throttle problems exihibiting similar outcomes to what you describe ( it only takes a poofteenth amount of shit to block up a fuel passage/jet in the carby ).I know you said the carby was rebuilt but if any crap is still in the line or you aren't running a filter it doesn't take much to make its way in.I know blokes that have whacked on a rebuilt carby and had problems within a day or two because they didn't clean out other parts of the fuel system as well.
Have you checked to see if its sucking air on the inlet side of things??
This will give poor idle and may contribute to some other probs depending on the throttle position.
May be other things, the above is just a start of the elimination process.

I can't think what to write here so this will do.
Thanks fellas-will definitely go the down the points/plugs/leads route first-
I am running a filter before the fuel pump and have been down the track of crap getting caught in the carby (I had bits of gasket floating around the fuel lines from an incorrectly fitted fuel pump kit.....) The tank, and lines have all been cleaned out so i reckon I can rule that area out now...!
have it in at the mechanics next week so I'll let you know how I get on.
cheers

yep that's tight Terry. My symptoms weren't surging/misfiring etc...it was more a lack of power esp up hills and off the mark...Stewart ( parisian62 ) had a similar problem ( kinda sorta ?? ) at Bendigo Nationals..... ended up being a flogged out timing gear keyway ( I think thats what is was??........
