opel 4 speed

Post by Scubbs »

firstly
I have a box stamped opel with Im thinking a date 25 6 69 stamped on it. is it an opel 4 speed from a HT :?:

secondly
if so what are these boxes like :?: :?: Im looking at puting it into my HR behind a 202. I know the HRs came with the opel 4 speed so will it be a relatively easy swap from the crash box
my goal is 4 on the floor

They are OK but apart from looking like a speed hump they don't really handle too much power, are getting hard to get and getting hard to find parts for. They do have a really nice feel with the shift sequence however and is the correct box for an original HR 4 speed.

Fine if you don't have big horses and don't subject the box to heavy use and really want to stick to originality in a HR or early Torana but the Aussie 4 speed is somewhat stronger ( everything has a breaking point however ) if you want to stick to a 4 speed.

Not exactly sure but since the Opel box looks like it has been squashed it may fit in an early holden without trans hump mods?? never done it myself.

From memory ?? the Opel boxes were made for a 4 cylinder application and Holden used them until coming up with the aussie 4 speed to replace the Opel.

Something like that anyway?? :? :?

They were also standard in an LC GTR. Not a box I'd recommend...

Yep, right there DR  a mate of mine is using one in his restored LC GTR behind the original 161 S, he is aware of it's limited power handling potential however.

Funny looking box 'eh :? .

Thanks for the info.
So the opel will stay in the shed for a while then i think

now
takeing advantage of whats easily available to me
a mate of mine is building a VK dunnydoor and his parts car has the 4 speed bolted to the 3.3 black and hes not useing it
I did some rough measurements and i reckon with a few little mods it would fit in nicely It has the direct imput for the gearstick so no linkages to worry about and the stick will come in to the body at a good position

will see how we go

If anyone can shed any light on doing this I would be interested. funnily enough i also have a mate building a vk with a 4 speed behind the black, and he's looking at a 308/5 speed-so the 4 speed will most likely be up for grabs.
I want to put it behind my grey-i hate autos and...Hydramatic...

Unless you have a Hydramatic bodied EK you will, at the very least, have to install a bigger transmission tunnel in place of the original manual trans tunnel. Will also have to fabricate a rear gearbox mount crossmember as well.

Some blokes have the rear crossmember/mount bolted to the floor and would probably run this way problem free for a million years but most,if not all, engineers will require a crossmember from sill to sill.

Jeff Dellow in Sydney used to make hydraulic clutch conversion. He's still in business, talk to him.

I watched a rich kid go through two gearboxes in a HR sedan when I was a kid on my paper round - he had the three sports versions of the HR - X2, 4 speed and also 186-S - the following year he had a yellow 327 Monaro - then a green XT GT ........
Still had it when I left school to start work in 1970 - probably the longest he has ever had a car....

I was of the opinon the Opel box was also fitted to the later Torana 1900 .... Sunbird from memory - something is nagging me that they weren't particularly well acclaimed.....

My cousin was going to purchase an LC 161 4 speed, but waited for the LJ mainly because of the gearbox..... and the bigger 202 motor.

Yes Terry, the bolt through floor short crossmember is what Rares sold back in the late 70/early 80's. It bolts through the two ribbed floor runners along each side of the box. A plate is fitted above the floor to sandwhich the fit - this is what still remains in mine - hasn't caused one bit of concern in the twenty years it's been doing it's job....

I understand current modifications requiring and engineering certificate
requires a chassis rail kit - and for the rear gearbox mount to be fitted in a lateral between rails.

Clutch - we were lucky enough to export Holdens overseas - to LHD countries.... the original grey motor slave cylinder was used and an adapter was manufactured by Holden to bolt up to a 4 sp Aus or all synchro 3 bell-housing.

The clutch hose was a very tight fit against the inner leg of the sub-frame - but did not require any further mods to make our clutch systems operate the Aus 4 / 3 boxes.

Speedo cable needed to be made up and a suitable length tailshaft with fine spline yoke shaft fitted..... I used a shaft from an LJ auto - just about spot on for length - but if I were to have one made up - it would be 3/8"s shorter.......
